Ferentz speaks and we learn... what did we learn? Not much other than what was released by Iowa Tuesday night. Ferentz wouldn't announce any new coaching changes besides Phil Parker's promotion and Morgan and Wilson's switch. LeVar Wood's doesn't have an official position yet, but Ferentz says "we'll find a spot." David Raih doesn't either. The best summary can be found in Morehouse's Quick Slants.
Reading those slants we learn Marcus Coker's decision to leave Iowa was his own. Ferentz responded to questions about the departed running back with,
"I think ultimately there was a little frustration there," Ferentz said. "He made the decision that was best for him. I told him I was going to support him no matter what. I think Marcus is a tremendous young man. I wish him all the best moving forward. He'll do well."
Ferentz went on to add,
"There's athletic department policy and there's student code of conduct, which every student on our campus adheres to," Ferentz said. "Then, you have legal issues. Internal conduct is sometimes more stringent than what our athletic department is. I don't know if it's ever been more stringent than what the university would regulate. We're part of the process and we work within the system."
Ferentz isn't in a hurry to announce his new offensive coordinator. The deadline, if you want to call it that, is March 24th, the beginning of spring practice. As far as the other two openings, Ferentz says he has people in mind but don't expect those announcements to come anytime soon.
Kirk didn't rule his son Brian out as a possible candidate for the open offensive line coaching position. When asked if he would call on Brian to return to Iowa City Ferentz said, "you know we're open to anything right now." He added, "I'm really confident we're going to get a good guy or we wouldn't have moved Reese."
There may be more to Reese's move to the defensive line than Ferentz would address. Kirk said this about it,
"Fair to say he was a little surprised on that one," Ferentz said. "But I guess I've got some executive privilege. I exercised it."
Morgan will take over for former coach Rick Kaczenski and by some accounts is the polar opposite in regards to approach. Perhaps a change from an in-your-face "MF this, MF that" coach in Kaczenski is what is in order along the defensive front. If anything, maybe it's an attempt to fix the attrition problems Iowa has had in keeping defensive line recruits on the roster.
After the jump, Iowa hoops vs. Northwestern and more links.

The Iowa men's team travels to Evanston to take on Northwestern tonight. The Hawkeyes have had hard luck in Welsh-Ryan Arena and are seven point dogs in tonight's match-up. Iowa is fighting for sixth spot in the Big Ten and a .500 record in conference play.
Iowa will start Cartwright, Gatens, Marble, White and McCabe. My favorite line-up because as Horace pointed out in Fran Graphs, these guys all have the ability to score from various spots on the floor.
Northwestern could be without starters Luka Mirkovic and JerShon Cobb. Mirkovic averages 5.9 points a game, Cobb 6 ppg in 11 games played.
John Shurna and Drew Crawford will play tonight for jNW. Shurna is averaging 19.8 points a game in Big Ten play, Crawford 16.1.
It's a big game. The Cedar Rapids Gazette's Scott Dochterman calls it "really big." Dochterman writes, believe it or not, that Iowa has an outside chance of an NCAA tournament berth. Obviously, at 13-11, that makes tonight's game a must-win to keep those slim hopes alive.

Man...
What a sad indictment of the last four years of Iowa basketball.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
Dammit, I got all excited that they might be selling throwbacks I could actually afford.
Ill Jukes - February 9, 2012
Yeah, I really think they missed an opportunity to sell
non-autographed, non-player jerseys to the masses. They could still do the auction that they’re doing AND do generic throwbacks.
Captain n Diet Coker - February 9, 2012
Every f*cking hoopster in IC would have to buy one
If you haven’t seen, Look at this f’ing hoopster
Ill Jukes - February 9, 2012
There are a lot of hipsters in Iowa City.
We could probably sell enough to actually pay a defensive coordinator.

I can't believe they're not selling them, frankly.
They were happy to sell the football throwbacks in 2004 and 2010.

This is about Student-Athletes,
they’re not in it to make money.
I guess I should clarify that. The Student-Athletes aren’t in it to make money, the University totally is.
Flakbait - February 9, 2012
Indeed.
And here’s a rare opportunity of the University leaving money on the table.

FUCK CLEMSON.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
How does this year's Clemson loss compare to last year's loss to Wake Forest?
The Mexican't - February 9, 2012
Good question
It looks like Wake Forest ended up at 258 last year, so that loss was even worse than the Clemson loss.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
So the program is moving in the right direction?
That’s what I’m hearing.
PackerHawk - February 9, 2012
The smart strategy

WaterlooChazz - February 9, 2012
Yeah Wake Forest was horrendous last year
That was also a game we really should have won too. We had a big lead and then completely blew it in the second half (Wake also had one guy who made a million ridiculous threes, but still). Clemson we just flat out didn’t show up and got run off the floor from the start. I don’t know what happened in the middle of this non-con season but it got really ugly there for a bit.
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
Well...
THAT’S SO IOWA!
RossWB - February 9, 2012
I think the mid-non-con slump had a lot to do with a couple injuries and Fran still figuring out who worked well with whom.
He had a TON of different lineups out in those games (that is, IIRC) and I believe we were still trying guys out for playing time because we didn’t have a lot of obvious starters coming back from last year.
Also, just to leave this here

I'm assuming that means for the 2013 season

Captain n Diet Coker - February 9, 2012
Probably
or he might be talking about calendar year, meaning he might enroll in the spring of 2013 if he has a degree by then.
isHawkeye - February 9, 2012
My understanding was that he needed to spend two years in JUCO since he didn't qualify at Iowa out of HS.
So that would mean Fall 2013. To his credit, Coe has been pretty consistent in his statements about wanting to come to Iowa as soon as he could, so hopefully this will be a rare success story among the recruits who fail to qualify. Usually those guys never end up making it to Iowa.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
hahaha "facebook pals"
Anyway, he means 2013. Coe can’t play this season, he has to finish his two year degree first.
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
But he could transfer in for spring next year I'm sure
my brother played at ICCC, and finished his degree in a year and half, so he could play spring ball wherever he transferred to (and to get out of dodge – Fort Dodge).
Brock8144 - February 9, 2012
He has to weigh the benefit of loading up on courses to finish early
with the possibility of overloading and not passing courses.
SomeJerkPoster - February 9, 2012
The prospect of living in Fort Dodge for a few extra months is a hell of a motivator
Anyway, yeah, Coe could absolutely get back by next spring (I don’t think he will, but it’s possible), but the way the guy worded it made it sound like he was going to be able to play in the up-coming season which isn’t happening.
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
it shouldn't be a stretch for him to be at Iowa next winter

Coaching search
I can understand Ferentz’s desire to be thorough and it certainly isn’t a case there hastobesomeonehiredrightnow!!!, but I would like it if he showed a little urgency in it. This entire “We’re in no rush, I’ll get to it when I finish cleaning out my garage” attitude Ferentz has taken, to date, only to turn around and make the obvious in-house hire, doesn’t reflect well on him because it looks like he’s either jerking around the coaches or the fans and that he’s a bit lazy. I know Iowa “isn’t sexy” but it would be nice if Ferentz didn’t try to reinforce that notion every chance he got.
HoyaGoon - February 9, 2012
You'll be happy to know that the longer he goes without announcing Brian the more likely Brian ain't coming
in fact, I would say if he doesn’t (he, being Brian) announce his resignation from NE within a week he is digging in there.
StoopsMyAss - February 9, 2012
I'm not sure about lazy,
but perhaps too deliberate.
Then again, he does seem to hire “for the long haul.” So maybe the new guys will be here for the next decade (approximately).
WaterlooChazz - February 9, 2012
For what it's worth
Northwestern hasn’t had Luka Mirkovic available for the last three-plus games and JerShon Cobb for the last I-don’t-know-how-many. They’ve been basically non-factors in Big Ten play, and Carmody’s begun to opt for a “small-ball” lineup with Shurna starting at center (and our center Davide Curletti off the bench). Should make for even more fun tonight.
MNWildcat - February 9, 2012
I hope Iowa really tries to push the tempo and wear out jNW if Carmody is really going with a six-man rotation.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
That would be the smart thing to do.
Shurna also played about 12-15 minutes against Illinois (I forget exactly) with 3 fouls from being forced to play against Meyers Leonard. I’m sure that eventually the 6-man rotation will manifest itself in tired arms/legs, foul trouble, and the like.
I just pray to God it’s not tonight.
MNWildcat - February 9, 2012
Re: Carmody going with a six-man rotation
To be clear, it’s not some bold or rash decision he’s making—there’s no one left, unless you want to see scrubs-extraordinaire Nick Freundt and Mike Turner off the bench. It’s literally down to Shurna-Crawford-Marcotullio-Sobolewski-Hearn-Curletti. There’s really no one else.
MNWildcat - February 9, 2012
That is one international sounding lineup.
txhawkeye - February 9, 2012
Carmody really likes his frequent flier miles.

It sucks, but you gotta do what you gotta do. If that means riding John Shurna like a horse, so be it. His face is a little horse-like, frankly…
RossWB - February 9, 2012
Exactly.
Well, I don’t know about the horse-face… But I understand the BHGP community has some latent desire to punch Shurna square in the face, so I’ll just kinda ignore that.
MNWildcat - February 9, 2012
Is that just us?
I thought the desire to punch Shurna in the face was pretty much universal.

Probably because we're right in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten and the league has so much respect as a whole this year.
That said, there’s a LOT of work to do to make an NCAA bid even a possibility, let alone a reality.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
Yeah, I keep hearing that the B1G is likely to get 8 teams into the NCAA tournament.
I think it’s fair to assume that Iowa can finish within the top 8.

NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
Baby steps. I'm just hoping for post-season play
and to get out of the 8-9 slot so Iowa wouldn’t have to play tOSU on day 2.
txhawkeye - February 9, 2012
10-8 in B10 play gets us in. That's a 6- or 7-seed in the B10 rankings.
therealCatnuts - February 9, 2012
Does anyone know how the Big Ten tournament will work with first round byes now that there are 12 teams?
I would assume 4 first round byes.
1st Round
5 vs 12. 6 vs 11. 7 vs 10. 8 vs 9.
2nd Round
1 vs 8/9
2 vs 7/10
3 vs 6/11
4 vs 5/12
Using the current standings before any games today that would put us as a 9 seed. Meaning our first two opponents would be Purdue and Ohio State.
If we could get to a 7 seed, which is likely as high as we could realistically get to we’d be looking at Northwestern and Michigan State.
Either way, it’ll feel good to get bounced by someone other than Michigan.
HawKCP - February 9, 2012

The gentleman's agreement thing is complete bullshit though
Everyone in the conference has stolen commits from other conference schools. Iowa does it all the time (sup, CJ Fed), or at least tries to. Shit, Wisconsin has a running back on their roster right now, Melvin Gordon, who was an Iowa commit, so I don’t know what the fuck Bielema is talking about. He’s just throwing a fit because he can’t handle getting out-recruited. Even his own AD said he was full of shit.
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
I’m enjoying these guys sniping at each other from afar. It makes them all look like assholes (not that they needed help).
txhawkeye - February 9, 2012
It is one of KF's better traits
in that he doesn’t get that worked up, publicly, about this sort of thing. I will say this, however, with Meyer’s arrival, he will need to up his game/enthusiasm level on the recruiting trail. That’s why I hope, and think where they’d be most instrumental, LeVar Woods and David Raih are brought on staff full-time
HoyaGoon - February 9, 2012
Eh, we weren't really beating OSU for recruits when Tressel were there either
Michigan and Penn State should be worried, but I don’t think it’s going to hurt us a whole ton
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
bleh "was there" I are bad at typing
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
Probably not a huge hit
but there is a trickle-down affect on our recruiting as guys perhaps overlooked by the big boys get interest since OSU makes it harder on them. Not the end of the world, but recruiting in the B1G just got more aggressive. I trust and hope that KF is aware of that and makes whatever tweaks in his approach he feels are necessary.
HoyaGoon - February 9, 2012

The Mexican't - February 9, 2012
I don't even think you could get tickets to that game.
You had to be a season ticket holder, IIRC. And they shafted us on our ticket allotment – it was like half of what normal universities give out.
HawKCP - February 9, 2012
You could single game tickets
I bought one through ISU. A few years ago they did make it so you had to buy student tickets to get an Iowa ticket, but it’s been awhile.
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
meant "season" rather than "student" here, whoops
NorseHawk - February 9, 2012
There have been different prices for non-conference and conference games for a while.
And the ISU game has always cost slightly more than the other non-conference games.
ISU’s “innovation” was just to really jack up the price on the Iowa-ISU (and Nebraska-ISU) tickets.
RossWB - February 9, 2012
I understand the idea
behind charging a little extra for the ISU game or a premium Big Ten game.
But for fuck’s sake, why do we need to have 4 different ticket prices? To pay for a bunch of trophy mock-ups for trophies that will be unpopular and re-designed, anyway? Seems kind of dumb.
WaterlooChazz - February 10, 2012
If the different costs are ruining your day, then you should buy multiple tickets and calculate your average.
Now you’ve got one ticket price and you can feel better about the whole situation.
The Mexican't - February 10, 2012
I have season tix.
I just think the multiple prices is rather dumb, and just a way for them to pretend they aren’t gouging for the shitty non-con games.
WaterlooChazz - February 10, 2012
Still a steal for the entertainment value you get.
therealCatnuts - February 9, 2012
That number is really just a facade though.
You’ve got to figure in the donation required for the seat license. Especially if you figure in all the other costs involved, it’s getting to be pretty damn expensive.
The problem is that they constantly increase prices whenever they can, and they never seem to bring them back down. If we have some really down years, it could get ugly.
