First, congrats Tyler Sash. You're a Super Bowl champion!
The cat may be let out of the bag. Last night, newly signed Hawkeye Jaleel Johnson posted on Facebook,
"The Iowa hawkeyes will be gettin a new defensive coordinator....the LB coach from the NEW YORK GIANTS!!!!"
Patrick Vint has already discussed Hermann via the "Short List," to review read here. Johnson's comments could mean a multitude of things. It's not clear if he has inside information or if he's speculating like the rest of us.
The last we had heard from Hermann, he was telling Mike Hlas, "I haven't talked to anybody (about the Iowa job)" Hlas added this,
If Herrmann knows all the ins and outs of Hawkeye football, he's a good actor. Because he asked me if Norm Parker had retired as Iowa's defensive coordinator, and he asked who Iowa's offensive coordinator was. He said he didn't know if Ken O'Keefe was still the OC or not, and called him "a real good coach."
Another Iowa coaching candidate, Brian Ferentz, isn't talking about Iowa's open positions. He is talking about the Patriot's loss to the Giants. When asked about Iowa's openings Ferentz told Mike Hlas,
"My job is the coach of the New England Patriots' tight ends. I'm trying to do that to the best of my ability today. What happens in the future, whether a year, two years, 10 years from now, I'm focused on doing my job."
Recruits are saying LeVar Woods is Iowa's newest defensive line coach. Hawk Central reports that recruit David Kenny said,
"I had a chance to meet the new (defensive) line coach, so that was good," Kenney said. "His name is LeVar Woods and we really just made small talk."
There was also talk that David Raih was introduced to recruits as Iowa's quarterback coach too. Iowa hosted several high school juniors yesterday as recruiting for the 2013 class is starting to ramp up. I believe the Raih stuff comes from 24/7 and Rivals but I've yet to see an article to link that isn't pay-per-view. One thing to remember, Raih and Woods may have been filling-in for camp purposes. We'll find out Wednesday.
After the jump, hoops and more links.

Iowa celebrated the 1986-87 basketball team in fantastic fashion Saturday with an easy win over Penn State. Iowa got a strong performance from Bryce Cartwright with 17 points and seven boards. Cartwright has had an up and down season and after a talk with coaches last week is feeling more confident. Cartwright says "knowing that coach trusts you plays a big part in it."
Iowa also got a strong performance from Aaron White. In fact, it was good enough for White to earn Big Ten co-Freshman of the week honors, again. White has no doubt earned his spot in the starting line-up. His stat line against Penn State looks like this: 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals.
Up next for Iowa is a Northwestern (14-8, 4-6) team coming off a road win against Illinois. Iowa sits one game ahead of Northwestern in the Big Ten standings at (5-6). Iowa will play at Penn State again next Saturday.
Ladie's hoops news. Lisa Bluder's squad will have to make a late season run without Jamie Printy. Jamie tore her ACL against Wisconsin last Thursday night. She is the Hawkeyes leading scorer with nearly 17 points per game. That is good enough for fifth best in the Big Ten.

Herrmann huh?
well thats just fantastic……
well i guess two super bowl rings will help with recruiting
justsomehawkeyefan - February 6, 2012
That's about the only positive I can see in it
If Hermann is the other option I’d rather just promote Phil Parker.
NorseHawk - February 6, 2012
Though maybe its a match made in heaven
Ferentz keeping Herrmann in check may be just what Herrmann needs to be a successful Coordinator.
justsomehawkeyefan - February 6, 2012
I'd prefer Parker, but I can live with Hermann
Now let’s fill that OC opening with someone better than KOK.

Notclevr - February 6, 2012
it's gonna be an interesting PTL
PSD - February 6, 2012
When is Chad Ford going to come out with his PTL Mock Draft 1.0, dammit?
I’m thinking Woodbury goes #1 just because good bigs are so rare, but Marble’s all-around brilliance should make him tempting, too…
RossWB - February 6, 2012
wasn't Basabe #1 last year?
wonder how he reacts when he’s #5
PSD - February 6, 2012
Not so!
My man BStiles says it was Cartwright at #1 last year, followed by Gatens. Basabe actually went 14th, likely because he was scheduled to be at the USA basketball camp (the one that cut him in favor of Doug McDermott because they are a BUNCH OF HATERS) and no one was sure how much of the PTL season he would be able to play in.
Also, Archie went #3 and Hubbard went #4? That shit is cray, yo.
I’d be shocked if the top 4 this year wasn’t Woodbury, Gessel, Marble, and White in some order.
RossWB - February 6, 2012
As much as anything the team sponsors want exciting picks.
Woodbury is the most exciting pick this year.
HawKCP - February 6, 2012
The battles for the starting line-ups will be crazy just in themselves.
With Basabe getting (rightly) benched, there are only two spots I see that will be nailed down next year:
Marble and White
Do we assume that two Top 100 recruits get starting spots (whether on reputation or performance)? It’s not the “Iowa Way,” but neither is Fran. I say yes.
Gessell
Marble
-——White
Woodbury
If only May could be anything other than a defensive specialist, I’d say, as the lone senior, he’d be the front runner. If I had confidence McCabe could guard SF, he’d be the front-runner.
Gessell – Oglesby – Clemmons
Marble – Oglesby – Ingram
May – McCabe
White – McCabe – Basabe
Woodbury – McCabe – Olaseni – Meyer
You have to get McCabe major minutes because he’s playing well enough to do so. SF is the place with the least number of set players. I really would like to see if he could be serviceable at SF. If Clemmons and Ingram are athletic enough, May’s best trait is somewhat not as important. But still, I like the idea of him starting games with Marble and Gessell to guard the other team’s best perimeter player.

A really good actor, or a poor poker player?
He’s in and KF told him the KOK was going to be moving on. He didn’t realize that he shouldn’t be telling everyone else this bit of news.
99playsNAblitzaint1 - February 6, 2012
Wednesday better be one hell of a presser
I don’t know if it lack of practice, disdain for the media, indecision, or what but the handling of the coaching staff situations this off-season has left something to be desired.
I still have a hunch that KF is just messing with us. He will probably roll out wednesday and say something to the effect of “I didn’t expect everyone to be so interested in these vacancies. They have all been filled by Robo-Norm. That will be all.”
6 seconds of hell - February 6, 2012
replace “They have all been filled by Robo-Norm” with “They are all still under consideration” and you may have your actual quote.

Didn't Tate call an audible there when he realized the clock was running out and it was going to be our last play?
Or am I misremembering…
RossWB - February 6, 2012
Yeah I'm gonna go out an a limb and guess that we didn't draw that one up that way
NorseHawk - February 6, 2012
I believe dolph's words were
""Nine seconds to play and Drew Tate doesn’t know that. The game’s going to end on this play."
such a glorious clusterfuck
sailorjerry - February 6, 2012
It's funny
because Drew Tate was one of the few people (including those on the Iowa sideline wearing headsets) who DID realize that the clock was spinning after the penalty.
rockyh - February 6, 2012
The playcall from the sideline was 4 verticals.
It was a called play. It wasn’t intended to be the last play of the game. Bad clock management made it that way.
rockyh - February 6, 2012
Thanks for clearing that up.
RossWB - February 6, 2012
This - Rockyh
On BTN, the interview with Tate, he stated that he didn’t realize the clock was going to start running right away so as he was approaching the LOS, he looked up and saw that it was and knew he was going to have to throw one deep, but like you said, they already had deep routes called.
DM_Purp - February 6, 2012
Yeah
Everyone in black and gold thought that the clock would stop after the penalty… but then the clock started. I remember Tate screaming his head off and waving his arms frantically trying to get everyone lined up, they were all nonchalantly ambling to the line.
I also was screaming and waving my arms frantically, as I remember.
rockyh - February 6, 2012
No, you're not
My favorite part of the BTN’s greatest games feature of the Cap One is at the end where they have KOK and Tate each give their refflections/remembrances of the play. KOK looks befuddled and couldn’t remember if LSU had lined up in zone or man coverage. Meanwhile, Tate breaks it down that LSU lined up in a Cover 3 zone and he saw that they were cheating towards the middle, leaving Holloway uncovered on the outside. It just perfectly incapsulated the obliviousbess KOK was prone to at times
HoyaGoon - February 6, 2012 via mobile
"obliviousbess"
That’s a great typo.
Now I’m imagining KOK being stung by a swarm of obliviousbees at various times over the past decade…
RossWB - February 6, 2012
Do you even realize when obliviouosbees sting you?
Or does your mind just wander off?
IIRC the safety that was suppose to have deep coverage on Soloman and Holloway deep outside cheated to the middle to help cover Chandler(?) and the corner dropped underneath. Love Tate’s reflection on that play. He initially thought he over threw him. Then he thought he put too much air under and the defender was going to catch him. I’ve got that on DVR actually. Should watch it tonight. haha.

Minor though it may be
It still confuses the fuck out of our coaches
HoyaGoon - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Also
I’m pretty sure in the ‘09 MSU game, the original play call was a fade route, but McNutt urged the coaches to call a slant because he could beat his guy inside. Just sayin’.
south_texas_hawk - February 6, 2012
I think it was a "read" route for McNutt
If the CB lined up with inside position, fade; if outside position (which it was) slant. It’s also why they sent the TE in motion from that side to the opposite side of the formation: confirm it was man coverage and to clear out that side
HoyaGoon - February 6, 2012 via mobile
And
Because there was a fade option, I think that’s why they went to MCNutt’s side instead of DJK’s (which he was pissed about), Marvin’s better height would be necessary for the fade
HoyaGoon - February 6, 2012 via mobile
IIRC
McNutt said that it was a called slant play, one that they hadn’t practiced since early in the year. His guy had been lining up outside to take away the fade (which has become a KOK tendency in goal-line situations), McNutt told the coaches that he had his guy beat to the inside, so they pulled that play out.
And then MSU blitzed, leaving McNutt 1-on-1.

that's a possibility
other possible rumor/speculation:
He was waiting on Jordan Diamond, who was also considering Michigan.

Diamond signed with Auburn
so does that mean Kozan goes to Michigan for oppurtunity or does he go with Auburn to be with his BFF? I guess I am ruling out Iowa because he would already be committed if it was going to happen.
Nature Boy - February 6, 2012
I think I recall reading that there was some question whether Diamond was even going to qualify academically
Rendering that consideration moot. FWIW, there have been rumors about Jaleel being questionable because of grades/scores as well

I was at Carver on Saturday
I think they severely underestimated the excitement that there would be for the ‘86-’87 team.
We got there at about 1:00 and I made a lap shortly thereafter around the entire arena to try and find a program. No dice. The programs were pretty cool looking. They featured caricatures of the players from the ‘86-’87 team on the cover. Not sure what kind of features they had inside the program. Someone else might be able to elaborate.
I wonder if they’re going to reprint the programs and sell them at the Indiana game, probably not.
The lines for autographs were insanely long as well. We had people waiting in two of the lines starting right when we got there and didn’t get autographs from either table that we were waiting for.
Also, when the ‘86-’87 team was announced Dr. Tom received the loudest ovation, by far, which was nice.
The game was pretty blah. We looked good at times, bad at times and Penn State just looked pathetic.
HawKCP - February 6, 2012
Re: Lines for autographs
There was a shit ton of budging in line going on. I fucking hate budgers. If you are one of those pathetic people, fuck you.
For some reason people at Iowa sporting events (and probably all sporting events in general) throw out common courtesy when in comes to standing in lines. I watch middle aged men with their young children school the kids on how to casually step in front of someone and act nonchalant about it. It happens all the time in the bathroom lines at Kinnick too. Real cool.

Re: Herrmann
Many of us have read Vint’s piece and the linked Michigan pieces. And it seems that if you’re in the “Rather have Phil” camp you are making an assumption that Herrmann hasn’t learned from being fired. I agree after Vint’s piece that some of the bloom came off of that rose, but c’mon it was awhile ago and it’s not like he’s been cryogenically sealed since then. He’s coached elsewhere, he’s seen what’s successful at multiple levels and maybe he’s even learned what he did wrong. IF he’s the new DC he may have had to convince KF that he has learned from his past mistakes and that a basic, fundamental approach that can be well executed is the way to go. Hopefully he’s learned from that. If he can get fired and not learn a damn thing and think he will pick up right where he left off he’s not good at his career.

The Giants organization
seems to have decided to build their defenses around the lines. Specifically they favor DEs. Kiwanuka came in as a DE and played pretty well there before moving to LB. They also have been willing to go with 3 or 4 DEs on the field at a time in passing situations. They’ve been drafting DEs highly for a while now, even when they were seemingly flush at the position.
Either way, the man has been around some pretty good defenses between Mich, NYJ, and NYG. I would think he’s pretty well schooled on what successful defense is all about.

Would you rather have 1990’s Favre or the succession of his QB coaches who rode that to HC or coordinator gigs? They are just ridiculously talented year in and year out.
PackerHawk - February 6, 2012
That's basically what I was thinking/insinuating.
therealCatnuts - February 6, 2012
Well said.

We don't talk about women's basketball much...
but that really sucks, re: Printy. I think Iowa was a bit of a long shot to make the NCAA Tourney this year anyway, but this is still a huge blow to whatever shot they did have.
Also, I’m pretty sure she’s roughly the 3487th Iowa women’s basketball player to tear an ACL while at Iowa. And we thought AIRBHG was bad…

AIWBBPHG?
rockyh - February 6, 2012
Exactly
RossWB - February 6, 2012
That is hard to pronounce.
txhawkeye - February 6, 2012
It's to keep people from saying it three times.
TwistConePlease - February 6, 2012
if you do say it three times
A spirit without ACL’s will appear and snap your thighs in half while burning your remaining eligibility.
(It happened to my cousin’s best friend’s sister’s kid)

Re: tourney hopes...
ESPN’s bracketologist has them as one of the first four out as of today.
RossWB - February 6, 2012
Also also...
On the bright side, they have won three in a row (including two straight on the road) and their five remaining games are all against teams below them in the standings or on about the same level.
RossWB - February 6, 2012
I just don't know how they will replace that production and influence.
But now is when it’s nice that we had a top-10 recruiting class
rupertj - February 6, 2012
Do we have a LB coach now?
Or would Herrmann be the DC/LB coach. Just wonderin.
DJK's bongwater - February 6, 2012
Darrell Wilson is the LB coach now.
RossWB - February 6, 2012
Maybe this is one of the scenarios they considered
Wilson maintains LB/ST title but shifts his focus more towards ST and Herrmann focuses on LT and DC. Erb is freed up to babysit/counsel/guard the knees of his RBs.

So Jaleel Johnson just admitted he made a mistake.
Lesson:
We all know better. We all know that Phil Parker is the DC.
I don’t do links, but I also don’t spread rumors.

…therehas been rumors going around about it that hanging on an 18 year old’s every word will lead them to mess with you.

And i did it, too. So I'm not pointing fingers at anyone! I thought he spilled the beans.

Who’s on flight track duty for the next 36-48 hours?
HawkeyeGirleye - February 6, 2012
Seriously
I would not be surprised if it’s announced tomorrow, making the press conference on Wednesday a nice little follow up.

Nope
That’s why I have switched back to simply using the mobile browser. Seems like an easy enough fix that it should be an update.

I'm using both
Love the app cause I can follow the thread though 1000x better than on mobile site. Plus the app loads the page alot faster. Haven’t seen any. gifs. Do those not work in the app or have none been posted the last few days?

See my opinion above
Mixed bag of schemes and success. No reason to assume that 2005 is the same as 2012. All speculation. Wait and see. Going to the gym. Later y’all.

And I can't believe Tim Harris has resigned
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I guess that loss to the Merchant Marine Academy was the last straw.
Fo real though, great link. I will waste a lot of time at that site.
codenameduchess - February 6, 2012
If you're like me you will.
Total waste of time but very interesting, although they were late on the Ken O’Keefe to Miami.
Since we’re not all fired up on our opinions about O’Keefe I’ll take this time to jack the thread. Anytime you lose a Hawkeye, and we can all agree Ken O’Keefe is a Hawkeye, it’s not good for the Hawkeye family. He will be missed, if for nothing else Ken O’Keefe was part of all of the good times. Best of luck to him in Miami.
