"I don't usually go to the top floor, but tonight I had a business meeting." -Devyn Marble via Jordan Garretson
For the video of Devyn Marble's late game dunk check out the video at High Porch Picnic
Iowa started out fast against the Gophers building an early 14 point lead. Cold shooting Minnesota started to find the bottom of the hoop and closed the gap and eventually went into halftime with a three point lead. Iowa's offense was lethargic for most of the second half until late when the Hawkeyes found a spark.
Marble drove down the court and did something we don't see every often, he stopped and popped a three. The very next possession Marble took the ball and drove around a Zach McCabe screen to rise up and throw down a one hand jam that fired up the Carver crowd of students taking advantage of free admission.
Marble finished with 12 points and senior Matt Gatens added 18. It was Iowa's first season sweep over Minnesota since 2007. The Hawkeyes will face Penn State Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Area at 2 pm (CT).
After the jump, recruiting recap plus more links.

Kirk Ferentz and his coaching staff inked 24 players on National Signing Day. Ferentz said they are still waiting to hear from one recruit, Alex Kozan. Alex was a no-show at his high school's ceremony for athletes to announce their college destinations. He had verbally committed to Iowa but now is still deciding between Iowa, Auburn and Michigan.
The Hawks added a pair of surprise recruits yesterday. Neither George Kittle or Reid Sealby's names were mentioned by the pay-per-view recruiting sites prior to signing day. Kittle is a legacy recruit. His father Bruce was a key part of Hayden Fry's Hawkeye turn around both as a player and coach in the early 1980's. Sealby was heading to Air Force before a late Iowa offer came via phone call. Reid is from Byron, Illinois, home of former Hawkeye Sean Considine.
In addition to scholarship additions, Iowa added four walk-ons from the Sioux City area. We knew about Andre Dawson, Michael Malloy, Alex Imming and Will Kincart, and now the Sioux City Journal reports Iowa also added Jeremy Nelson and Cole Croston. Nelson played at Heelan with Malloy, he's number 64 in these YouTube clips. Cole is the son of former Hawkeye and Big Ten Offensive Linemen of the Year Dave Croston. Cole doesn't have a YouTube highlight but he does have videos on Hudl.
Ferentz held a press conference to discuss Iowa's newest members of the football team. He didn't discuss the defensive job openings but did announce Iowa will hold a press conferece next Wednesday. If video isn't your thing you can read the entire transcript here.
You can also read the "Quick Slants" from Marc Morehouse. Marc also has a longer recap of the days events including defensive coordinator talk. His recruit bios, like this one with Connor Kornbrath, will start rolling out today.

That Sash-Greenwood story was good.

Yeah, surprisingly hard to read.
Great story.

Great Day to Be A Hawk.
But if that kid isn’t yet another example of the great people and players that come out of Iowa City, there aren’t any examples of great people and players.

I'm guessing
That I won’t be the only one with a new sig this morning.

That quote . . .
Swaggerific.
Love it.

Rewatched that Marble dunk a half dozen times.
Am I grasping at straws when I notice Basabe was one of two (Archie was the other, I think) guys on the bench who didn’t react in any way?
Kyle McCann't - February 2, 2012
I think I remember him (Basabe) looking pretty excited during one of the time out huddles around that time towards the end.
It could have been before or after that play, though. Overall I thought he looked like he was happier to be there than a few other previous games. I think that’s just his normal expression. He’s Ferentz’s kind of player! Kidding, mostly.
Give Eddie a Beer - February 2, 2012
Yeah, I dunno.
BTN also caught Basabe yawning at the end of the game, which… okay, sometimes you just gotta yawn, I suppose. I’m sure he wasn’t happy to be on the bench in crunch time, but at the same time I wouldn’t really have wanted to see him on the court over anyone that was out there. White and McCabe were playing well.
I was happy that Basabe played as well as he did when he did get minutes last night, though. He was pretty active and energetic, did a nice job rebounding, etc. From that evidence, at least, it didn’t seem like he’d checked out on the game/team at all, which is good.
RossWB - February 2, 2012
Agreed
But if I were Fran, I would definitely have him checked for the full gamut of diabetes/mono/what-have-you. He is not the same kid who gave as good as he got with Sullinger last season.
Notclevr - February 2, 2012
Last night was the first time I really noticed from the beginning of the season
how much better he looks physically. He’s a lot leaner, like he was last season. Or maybe it is mono.
Give Eddie a Beer - February 2, 2012
Maybe he's got sleep apnea.
SomeJerkPoster - February 2, 2012
so by the time we get him a sleep study and he gets his machine
we’re looking at about 2-3 weeks to really get his energy back after he starts using the CPAP. So he might be well rested in time for the B1G tourney.
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
Dude, I've yawned during hard-ass workouts.
Sometimes it’s the bodies natural response to needing more oxygen.

StoopsMyAss - February 2, 2012

I yawn a lot when I’m lifting.
SomeJerkPoster - February 2, 2012
Reading this exchange made me yawn.
Bucketochicken - February 2, 2012
"yawn" is an interesting word
It is one of the few words that creates an involuntary physical response, specifically yawning. Same for viewing somebody doing, you get the urge. The only other one I can remember off the top of my head is “itch”. So, I hope I just got you to itch by reading that. Bet you love me for that.
therealCatnuts - February 2, 2012
A of the reading section (the longest one, unfortunately) on one of the SATs I took was about yawning.
That was goddamn miserable.
hkobb7 - February 3, 2012
YOUR FACE YAWNED
SomeJerkPoster - February 2, 2012 via Android app
I yawn after 10 mile runs
Usually because my ass is beat and its time for a nap.
The Bird Cult - February 3, 2012
He played his best game in weeks (and it wasn't even that good)
So you have to think he didn’t appreciate being on the bench during crunch time. Then again, he’s not even starting so I’m not sure what he thought was going to happen. I also found it interesting that Olaseni came in instead of Brommer. Is this the fall of the Brommercide?
That postgame interview of RDM had to make you smile: Tom Davis’s son was asking Roy Marble’s son questions while they should video of Marble Sr. cheering on RDM after the posterization of Ralph Sampson III. You also gotta love RDM’s confidence. He basically said he knew he was going to make it (that clutch 3 pointer) because he’s confident in his jump shot. I wish some other guys had that confidence.

Both his voice and his manner of speaking. Some of the mannerisms and facial expressions are there too. Could be a coaching dynasty in the making. Good for him.
RazorHawk - February 2, 2012
I hope so
On a somewhat related note, this is my guess for a dark horse DC candidate, on the theory that Brian said good things about him to Kirk and they are willing to go young:

Ill Jukes - February 2, 2012
We're getting a hell of a kid in Andre Dawson.
I’ve known him for a long time (same class at Wash as my younger brother) and he’s both a class act and hard worker. It’s an added bonus that he has the body of a B1G back and experience in the college atmosphere. I’m trying to not be homer and get my hopes too high, but getting Hawk Jr could prove to be huge.
Smokin Herb Grigsby - February 2, 2012 via mobile
As another CRWash alum
this makes me happy. Of course, the last RB we got out of Wash didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Or did he?

Smokin Herb Grigsby - February 2, 2012 via mobile
I believe Joel Maturi just resigned as the AD for Minnesota.
BStylin Hawkye - February 2, 2012
Because of the Marble dunk??
Can’t say I blame him.
Notclevr - February 2, 2012
Tubby is blaming Maturi for his team losing twice this year to an Iowa BBall team that all B1G fans think is terrible. Hint: although extremely erratic, they’re not terrible.
txhawkeye - February 2, 2012
If our good friend WSR is to be believed (and he is, of course) it sounds like Maturi "resigned"
The Mexican't - February 2, 2012
I watch the press conference.
You could tell by his voice that he wasn’t that into the job anymore.
BStylin Hawkye - February 2, 2012
Was he ever really into the job?
The Mexican't - February 2, 2012
Minny fans have wanted him gone for a long, long, long time.
RossWB - February 2, 2012
Then I'm glad he lasted as long as he did.
Give Eddie a Beer - February 2, 2012
Ditto.
In the last few years, the ADs that brought Ron Zook and Tim Brewster to the Big Ten have resigned (or “resigned”).
It’s the end of an era, gents.
RossWB - February 2, 2012
That Brewster hire was an absolute disaster from day one
I can understand the Zook hiring, but will never get the Brewster era
therealCatnuts - February 2, 2012

Not only for the good times they brought BHGP,

Gopher is a generic term for small ground rodents including the pocket gopher, some ground squirrels, and some prairie dogs. Groundhogs are marmots and are the largest members of the ground squirrel family whose smallest members are considered “Gophers”.

haha jFitzy
therealCatnuts - February 2, 2012
The most confusing part to me is that 2002 OSU is seeded 1st, while 2002 Iowa is seeded 6th.
Sure OSU won the mNC and Iowa was smashed by USC in the Orange Bowl, but that seems like a big drop for teams that were generally perceived as equal heading into bowl season.
The Mexican't - February 2, 2012
I can't take too much offense. Those bowls did happen.
therealCatnuts - February 2, 2012
As catnuts says, dem bowls DID happen, sadly.
Also, the top 3-seeds won national titles (although ‘97 Nebraska can fuck right off; I know why Bama included them, but it still annoys me to see Nebraska included in any sort of B1G historical piece… their B1G history started in 2011, end of story). The 4-seed was a juggernaut until they got Daniel Murray’d and the 5-seed won the Rose Bowl. As awesome as 02 Iowa was, they did lose to ISU (godfuckingdammit) and had that crappy Orange Bowl. So I can see where he got a 6 seed from.
Hopefully the WhatIf Sports computers like the 02 Hawks. (I do wonder how much they’ll like the 02 Buckeyes, because the strengths of that team were defense, special teams, and luck… I’m not sure how well computers can simulate that.)
RossWB - February 2, 2012
So this
I get more than a little upset when I see Tom Osborne and Tommie Frazier during those Big Ten spots. That happened well over a decade ago. Why that’s included is beyond me.
Nickhawk08 - February 2, 2012
5 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!
The Bacon Explosion - February 2, 2012
Also, before Nebraska was around
Penn State was never included in “Big Ten’s Best___ of the 80’s” and the like because they weren’t in the Big Ten yet. Once Nebraska became a part of the conference, they were included. Makes no sense (and Penn State totally got the shaft).

“Hey Jim, just go ahead and make up a title that sounds impressive but doesn’t sound like you’re going to be involved our athletics programs”

Even though I have it on DVD, I still like to watch it. It annoys me that in the Iowa post-game interviews that take place in the Iowa visitor’s locker rom, the walls are not pink. But they did do a good job of the giant ANF sticker on the helmets.
