Junior Senior - Move Your Feet from Manolis_G on Vimeo.
We try not to bust out the Junior Senior for every win, but after the abject misery of the last two Iowa basketball games and the fact that this win clinched the first season sweep of Minnesota in basketball since 2007, well, it seemed warranted. Iowa opened up a 12-point lead in the first half by playing okay... and Minnesota playing really, really, really badly. Minnesota stopped playing so badly, started making threes (they shot 53% for behind the arc for the game and over half of their total points came from threes), and eventually built a 10-point lead of their own in the second half. They led by five as late as 2:30 left in the game. And then Iowa took over.
Kudos to Roy Devyn Marble, who was as marvelously clutch down the stretch here as he was in Iowa's earlier B1G wins over Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Kudos to Matt Gatens, who was Iowa's leading scorer (18 points on 7/14 shooting) and seemed to play a role in almost every good play Iowa had.
Kudos to Aaron White and Zach McCabe, who overcame some tepid shooting (2/7 and 2/5, respectively) to still combine for 17 points and 17 rebounds and give Iowa a spark in the second half.
And kudos to Melsahn Basabe, who's often been the invisible man this season, but who contributed 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench tonight and looked active and engaged when he was on the court.
But kudos to the entire team, really. This game just did not feel like a game Iowa would win after the early lead evaporated behind a barrage of Gopher long-range bombs. This felt like a game we've seen time and time again over the past few seasons, one where they piss away a lead and can never get enough stops to get back into the game. How nice to be wrong about that. Go Hawks.

GET NAKED
Adam Jacobi - February 1, 2012
Watched this one in a filthy Minneapolis bar with a bunch of filthy Gophers.
How sweet the taste of victory!
The Final Gun - February 1, 2012
I hope Minnesota keeps Tubby Smith around for years to come
He’s so hilarious.
mikjones24 - February 1, 2012
I really thought this one was over when they caught back up. I love that this Iowa team threw out the typical Iowa script.
The Final Gun - February 1, 2012
I thought it was over when they kept draining a goddamn 3 as an answer to every good play Iowa had.
So happy Iowa found a way to win anyway.
RossWB - February 1, 2012
This. Same for me.
That stretch at the end of the second half was infuriating.
therealCatnuts - February 1, 2012
You mean the stretch where they missed a few threes and Iowa built a lead?
Or at the end of the first half where they were on fire and built their own lead?
/Nit, picked
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
I think I quit watching around 9.
I missed all the fun.
The Mexican't - February 2, 2012
Big
Big. I heard Bobby Hansen interviewing Devyn III and Roy Sr on the radio. Come on Hawks, beat the piss out of Penn State. Carver will be rocking…..
hawkinsandmelrose - February 1, 2012
Wait, Dad is Roy Sr. and son is Roy the 3rd?
Wacky.
tyger1147 - February 2, 2012
Not Roy III
Don’t share the same middle name- Roy wanted him to be ‘Roy’. Mom wanted ‘Devyn’. Compromised with ‘Roy Devyn’.
HawkeyeGirleye - February 2, 2012
So what is the III for?!?! I am now thoroughly perplexed.
tyger1147 - February 2, 2012
My bad.
I mixed up the names…..
Roy Devyn Marble, Jr. dunked over Ralph Sampson, III. I transposed the Jr’s and III’s in the wrong places.
hawkinsandmelrose - February 2, 2012
and he's not a junior.
Roy Marble is a junior, RDM is just Roy Devyn Marble.
rupertj - February 2, 2012
We had a good signing day
with no one switching to other schools from their commitment (im not sure Kozan committed to anyone) and a overall very nice class with some very good walkons coming too, and we beat Minny at basketball. it was a good day.
justsomehawkeyefan - February 1, 2012
going to have to get me a fat burger here in a couple hours...
TwistConePlease - February 1, 2012
My goodness...
was that RDM slam redunkulous or what???
hawktalker - February 1, 2012
both
RDM’s and Gatens’s dunks were sick:)
hawkfan4life - February 1, 2012
I actually had to wait for the replay
To see if RDM actually made it. He threw it down with authority. Amazing how those two worked the final four minutes.
The Bacon Explosion - February 2, 2012
Another nice dunk from White too
He is getting pretty good at the put back throw down. If only Cartwright hadn’t thrown that attempted alley-oop 3 feet behind him…
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
Hello,
I didn’t get a bobble head, but I did drink booze at CHA and watch Marble make Minnesota fans get sad, which was neat.
It was nice to win a game that they had to keep coming back, rather than letting it get out of hand. I guess I would have been ok with a blowout, but this was good.
Give Eddie a Beer - February 1, 2012
The bobblehead has Fran holding a baseball bat and ball, and it says "Fran McCaffery: The Baseball Fan." WTF?
Did they run out of the basketball themed bobbleheads, or is this just a subtle warning to the B1G refs that Fran is not afraid to go all Casino on their asses?
Also why did Fran look like he wanted to murder McCabe tonight? I didn’t really see the play, but he spent an entire timeout and part of the next play ripping McCabe a new asshole. I wish someone would sneak a mic into that huddle. It would probably be highly entertaining, and I think I’d probably learn a few new words here and there.
HawkeyeInExile - February 2, 2012
If this ass chewing you speak of came late in the game
I think it was because McCabe left a hot shooter open (made a wrong switch) – his guy nailed a 3.
FiveSecondRuleChef - February 2, 2012 via mobile
yea
no reason to guard R. Sampson III beyond the arc leaving a shooter open 10 feet away.
The Bacon Explosion - February 2, 2012
Also shortly before that, Mccabe also could have hustled out to contest a 3
but instead he just kind of stuck his hand up and jogged. That one made me mad.
clay-born to party - February 2, 2012
RDM #9 on Sportscenter.
mikjones24 - February 1, 2012
ONLY #9?!
Blasphemy!
Captain n Diet Coker - February 2, 2012
Great game!
And an awsome comeback again. Finally pulled one out. I thought they had it in them after both of the OMHR games, but it was good to see them come all the way thru. One complaint though. it seems to me that the refs are just ignoring push-offs to get open shots hthese days, ie…the last 3 games we have played. i try not to harp on the abysmal reffing this year, but that one point really stands out to me.
hawkfan4life - February 1, 2012
Do we get Floyd back now?
Enoch - February 1, 2012
It looked like iowa was just better
but then minnesota woke up and ralph sampson the third was a god damn monster on the inside. i thought they might fold once minnesota was up 10, but they put together a nice run and never let the game get to far away from them.
it looks like obgelsby is getting more comfortable on the floor, he could become a real nice player if he keeps getting better like he has (i know he didn’t do much this game, but his overall demeanor is much less watch the big guns run around and more i’m looking to make an impact).
jakeic - February 1, 2012
Fran talked about that during the pre-game with Gary.
Said he was “a player” and not just a shooter. Fran said Ogles3 is realizing one of the big differences from high school ball (where you have a ton of time to make something happen) is that in the Big Ten, if you pass up a shot, you probably aren’t getting another chance during that possession, so when he sees that shot he’s starting to take it (as was in evidence during the Indiana game) and not just being a body on the floor.
Eyeheartfreedumb - February 1, 2012
Although last night he passed up quite a few open shots
Which was kind of odd given the pregame talk
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
IT'S BUSINESS TIME
RossWB - February 1, 2012
It's Biz-nass
It’s BUSINESS TI-IME!
/Dev knows what you’re talkin about, you’re talking about it being business time
Eyeheartfreedumb - February 1, 2012
is RDM becoming my favorite hawkeye in any and all current sports?
why yes….yes he is. that sentence just shot him past Nico Law and McD
justsomehawkeyefan - February 1, 2012
Other Marble quote regarding his dunk
“I don’t go on the top floor too often but I had a business meeting tonight.”
Kluginator - February 2, 2012
if he can hit that 3 about 35% of the time
He is going to be a monster match up for any defense.
The Bacon Explosion - February 2, 2012
haha, that's pretty great.
tyger1147 - February 2, 2012
His dad said something like
He’s 6’ 7". He can dunk.
hawkinsandmelrose - February 2, 2012
"He's going to dunk on a lot of people in the next few years."
Yes, please.
HawkeyeInExile - February 3, 2012
I think I'm with you on this one.
He’s obviously been told by Fran to do as he pleases, and he can do a lot. It’s amazing what talent and confidence can do for a player and a team.
hawkinsandmelrose - February 2, 2012
Perfection
Captain n Diet Coker - February 2, 2012
anyone have a link
tyger1147 - February 2, 2012
I think iowa leads the big ten in players with 3 names in football now
we have 3 players coming in with them. that’s ridiculous
justsomehawkeyefan - February 1, 2012
My joy over this win
is only tempered by my learning that Junior Senior are no longer together.
Josh Timmers - February 2, 2012
Junior became Senior, Senior graduated
Next man in.
Patrick Vint - February 2, 2012
Is this true or just a CFB joke?
therealCatnuts - February 2, 2012
By the way, Doug McDermott is awesome.
If not for Fran, I could easily see Gessell going there next year and… yikes.
tyger1147 - February 2, 2012
Dare we say that Fran getting the top two recruits in Iowa (not entirely true, I know)
is a positive? Could it be we will keep the in-state talent at Iowa?
No, it won’t be. But it was fun for 31 words.
hawkinsandmelrose - February 2, 2012
