Kirk Ferentz is speaking to the press for the first time since the Insight Bowl today and while the topic is ostensibly National Signing day and the crop of recruits Iowa harvested this year* there's sure to be a few questions about the Neverending Defensive Coordinator Search and the Marcus Coker, Mika'il McCall, and A.J. Derby transfers, too. Granted, Ferentz will almost certainly say nothing of interest or consequence in response to those questions, but still: they will be asked! (Maybe. Probably.) On the bright side? No rhabdo questions this year.
* See, I can make all kinds of Iowa farming references! Sign me up, mainstream media! I'm ready to graduate to the big leagues!
Anyway, the presser starts at 4pm CT and it's being streamed ($$$) on Hawkeye All-Access. Hawk Central is liveblogging the shindig as well and all your favorite Iowa media types (Morehouse, Dochterman, Hardy, Randy Peterson, etc.) will no doubt be Tweeting up a storm from there.
The usual rules of open threading apply: no links to illegal online streams, no porn, no religion, no politics, no slurs, no douchebaggery, etc.

When I asked my niece about him this was the conversation
Me: “Is there a large black kid in any of your classes who transferred in this year?”
Her: “umm, not that I can think of”
Me:“Is there a kid named Jaleel that you’ve seen at all”
Her:“Oh, Jaleel? Yeah he’s pretty legit in the large black guy department”.
PackerHawk - February 1, 2012
She sounds nice.
SomeJerkPoster - February 1, 2012
She is
Except she’s going to Northern Illinois, so she’s dead to me.
Seriously though, all of my sister’s kids got into a Bucky Badger “thing” this year. They all wanted Bucky Badger shit for Christmas. This has nothing to do with Wisconsin, and they actually wanted stuff with Bucky that didn’t say “Wisconsin”. But still, I threatened to disown my mother if she ever did that again. Dad silently nodded and gave her a look that said “I told you you’d piss off one kid by pleasing your grandkids”.

Besides, her boyfriend is going to North Central so if she ends up in De Kalb I see a lot of time spent back in the Naper/Downer’s ish area anyways.
PackerHawk - February 1, 2012
Ugh, Naperville.
Where Iowa’s sororities find their filler?
Naperville grads – being fleeced for exorbitant out of state tuition since 2002.

Just buy them a pet Badger. That will teach them.
Hawkeyes - February 1, 2012
The Badger would terrorize their St Bernard
before the Beagle-Korgi mix went into hardwired behavior mode and killed the Badger.
PackerHawk - February 1, 2012
A sick part of me would love to see this go down (and I'm a dog lover)
People just don’t give beagles the correct level of respect, I suppose.
Regardless, those kids would fucking hate Badgers.
Hawkeyes - February 1, 2012
We grew up with a beagle
Much respect for them. And her St Bernard is the biggest baby/wuss big dog I’ve ever met. He gets pushed around by the Puggle.
PackerHawk - February 1, 2012
Our dog is convinced
that everybody loves him and wants to pet him. He wouldn’t last ten minutes in the wild.
Flakbait - February 1, 2012
Mine too
Although he was a stray who obviously survived in the wild somehow. I think it was in the city so he scavenged and begged. When he flushes a critter while we’re walking or hiking he just kind of looks at it surprised and goes back to whatever he was sniffing at. I have seen him eat a dead squirrel, but it froze in my tree during an ice storm so he basically just sniffed out a Squirrelcicle.
PackerHawk - February 1, 2012
Grew up with mostly Labradors
They’re tough enough in the wild, especially when you hunt train them, but man they’re a pushover in the house. Our neighbors cocker spaniel used to just bite my last yellow’s neck and get carried around. A beagle/Terrier/annoying small dog would never stand for that.
Hawkeyes - February 1, 2012
I have 2 Wheaton terriers. The older one would happily take on any dog on earth and rip it’s throat open if only she were given the chance. The younger one is mystified by this behavior. To be fair, the younger one is extremely stupid.
txhawkeye - February 1, 2012
Yup, it's all personality

But on a position coach level, he did very well with the Soup hire and the Kaz hire was pretty solid. The Morgan hire has helped in-state recruiting, although it’s fair to question how the OL has performed under him at times.
Still a pretty small sample size, though, and DC is a big deal hire (especially for us).

SomeJerkPoster - February 1, 2012
I don't know a lot of the details from that event. My dad has some fucked up stories
from Wartburg in the 60’s.
They kidnapped a couple of Luther guys, shaved their heads, and painted W’s on their heads with walnut stain. They kept the guys down there for a couple of days and only let them out when the state patrol started sniffing around.
They had a guy steal a car and park it in the dean’s driveway, while the dean was on vacation. He had to be called back from his vacation to deal with the problem.
Morgan, apparently, is really pale. To scare the shit out of prospective students, he used to give himself bloody noses and let the blood pour all over his chest. Then he would run into a room full of prospective students screaming holy hell.

I have no idea why they’re hosting a Junior Day on Sunday. Seems like awful timing.
RossWB - February 1, 2012
Kirk is going to go hang out with the Mannings – and try to get on tv.

Peyton is our new DC
it all comes together…..

I would totally be ok with that hire. Of course, that falls into the category of “as likely as it being Tom Brady” but hey.

Huh, that was kind of an awkward comment there about Coach K and Nebraska
Captain n Diet Coker - February 1, 2012
I smell BS.
RossWB - February 1, 2012
That's to be expected.
After his introduction PC at Nebraska, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear about him completely selling Iowa out.
The Mexican't - February 1, 2012
I would never expect KF to dis him in public.
But I’m sure he wasn’t pleased about Kaz flipping to Nebraska and pursuing Curry hard for them after he’d been recruiting him hard at Iowa.
RossWB - February 1, 2012
at least he probably didnt negative recruit against us
“you remember all the good things i said about Iowa? turns out i was lying, they suck. but im totally telling the truth when i say nebraska rules i swear!”

So, to recap:
1) We should know who the new DC is next Wednesday.
2) Jaleel Johnson is a very large man.
3) Kornbrath will compete for the starting punter job.

but i completely understand. not having a ChickfilA here sucks
justsomehawkeyefan - February 1, 2012
On Iowa Pod suggests there's one opening in IC
Meanwhile, there’s a Chik-Fil-A here at WCU. If only there was a football team to recruit for….
nhradar - February 1, 2012
There's a Chick-Fil-A at the mall in Iowa City (or Coralville, if you want to be an asshole).
Would probably be nice to have an actual restaurant though, instead of a spot in the mall’s food court.
The Mexican't - February 1, 2012
Yeah, I know about that one
But oniowapod talked about a cow suit coming to their office with samples; not sure if that was the IC office or the CR office. I was thinking about the on campus c-f-a demo.
nhradar - February 1, 2012
There used to be one in the Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids
but I assume that like everything else in that mall, it has gone out of business.
HoyaGoon - February 2, 2012
It's still there.
With the county offices still in the mall, they keep the food places busy.
BStylin Hawkye - February 2, 2012
Best thing ever
Xarin - February 1, 2012
Um, I will totally be choosing a neighborhood to buy a house in
that is close to my favorite grocery stores. This seems like an entirely reasonable thought, even if it’s just a fast food joint.
therealCatnuts - February 1, 2012
The Chick-Fil-A is on Chicago Ave right downtown near Michigan Ave.
There’s a rumor that is one is going to open in Lincoln Park this summer, too!

Dantonio's negative recruiting pitch
At Iowa, they kick you off the team if you go to jail, here at MSU, you can suit up the Saturday after you get out.

Dantonio pitched Jaleel
their play 2 plays, sit out 1 hurt defensive scheme.

What's the deal on Kozan?
Did he sign his LOI with you guys, or is he going to Michigan?
Ted Glover - February 1, 2012
WHY MUST YOU RUB IT IN
Actually, we don’t know. I don’t think anybody knows, even him.
therealCatnuts - February 1, 2012
Wasn't doing that, promise
Just was checking all the B1G teams on Scout and he didn’t have the checkmark next to his name, then saw that he might be re-thinking going to Michigan.
If it’s any consolation, I hope you get him.
Ted Glover - February 1, 2012
Totally up in the air.
Sounds like he’s deciding in the next few days, maybe.
RossWB - February 1, 2012
The news here in the Queen City of the Plains is all Yuri Wright...
and Cyler Miles sticking with UDub. Not a peep about Kozan aside from the old article about him choosing Iowa from Sunday.

I found KF's word choice regarding DC opening to be interesing...
The reliance on the word “scenarios” sounds like there may be moving parts to all this. In other words, KF did not sound as if he had hired a DC who would just come in and replace Norm, end of story. Herrmann is a LB coach, so in theory if anyone could just walk in and replace Norm’s roles one-for-one it would be him—-I would imagine he could cover the LBs and the DC responsibilities quite easily. Maybe KF is being coy, I don’t know but I found his word selection revealing.
Moreover, KF would NOT commit to who is the new DL coach and he would not commit to Levar Woods as that coach.
StoopsMyAss - February 2, 2012
another thought
KF said while recruits did ask about the DC-to-be it was not an issue, so I am thinking he will be hiring a guy whose philosophy will be very compatible with that of what Norm ran. That seems more and more likely to me. Even though Iowa recruits players and molds them to positions (which on the face of it would mean they could hire any sort of DC) I think it is becoming more and more clear that the DC will not bring radical change to Iowa City—-and why should he? That is the one aspect of Iowa football that has been consistently excellent over the last decade and KF likely believes that it’s more than just scheme as to the reason why. That defensive philosophy works well within Iowa’s development model and commitment to interior superiority.
Again, the scenario comment has me thinking there will be a domino effect in place that might spill over to the offensive side of things. I also think KF’s comments mean Bradley is still very much a possibility.
StoopsMyAss - February 2, 2012
I hope so
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
Then, why wait so long? Bradley hasn’t been in the NFL playoffs. Oh well, other than frustrating those of us who are interested in this type of thing, from all appearances it didn’t negatively impact recruiting.
txhawkeye - February 2, 2012
Not sure about waiting until next week.
But there’s no way that you hire him last week once JoePa died. They may have decided out of respect to PSU to not hire him until after signing day weeks ago. I guess we’ll all find out next Wednesday.
PackerHawk - February 2, 2012
Here's a better video for RB recruit, Nate Meier
Something tells me that this kid was underrated in the obscurity of 8-man football, and that this will evolve into a huge get for Iowa.
