It's Not Plagiarism If You Link To It: Hawkeyes Add Walk-On (s) At Running Back

The Hawkeye football team is gaining a walk-on running back. Andre Dawson, formerly of Cedar Rapids Washington and most recently Iowa Western Community College, will join the Hawkeyes at the semester. Dawson originally committed to Northern Iowa out of high school. He took a red shirt his freshman season at UNI and then decided to take "a different path in life."

Dawson is a big guy, 6'2" 200 pounds. When he committed to UNI his high school coach, Tony Lombardi, said, "UNI is going to be getting a Shonn Greene-type back." At IWCC he joined former Hawkeye commit Rodney Coe in the backfield, another big bruising rusher. If he ever makes it off the scout team with the Hawks could depend on if he stays at running back. Dawson is open to changing positions.

The Hawkeyes received a verbal commitment from Sioux City Heelan running back Michael Malloy back in July. He had a scholarship offer from Iowa but now will have to walk-on next season if he is to stick with the Hawkeyes. Malloy had legal issues over the summer and plead guilty to a misdemeanor, obstructing a peace officer. He was suspended the early part of the high school football season and then suffered a season ending ACL injury. Malloy had been the only in-state high school player to accept a scholarship offer from Iowa.

Also on the recruiting front, the Hawkeyes missed out on four-star prospect Quanzell Lambert. The linebacker from Sicklerville, New Jersey, gave his verbal commitment to Rutgers. His final three were Rutgers, Iowa and Nebraska. He played with current Hawkeye Quinton Alston but ultimately decided to play close to home.

Star-divide

It appears that Penn State has found their football coach. Current New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien is expected to take the job following the Patriots' season. There is an interesting Iowa slant here. Brian Ferentz is the tight ends coach for New England and could move up the ladder. Ferentz is only 29 years old but Mike Reiss, of ESPN.com, isn't counting Ferentz out of the running for New Enlgand's newest OC.

Good news here:

Carver could sell out Saturday

Winning may not cure everything but it cures a great deal
Pulling Malloy's scholarship is interesting, has KF ever done that before to a kid who committed?

It seemed a bit sketchy until I remembered the legal stuff. Although, still slightly sketchy.

could be a good move, the kid really wanted iowa, doesn’t really deserve a scholarship after his mess, and probably has him a little desperate following his ACL. Make him come in hungry. Still could be a great football player.

Good move picking up Dawson, awesome name

I feel bad for him for his knee injury. If it was surgically repaired, you have to think he’s redshirting no matter what next fall. I assume he’s an Iowa resident, so in state tuition + trouble with the law + resulting partial suspension + knee problems = walk-on status seems deserved.

Actually

I seem to recall the kid not being that high on Iowa during the recruiting process. I think the kid screwed up, and don’t really have that much problem with his scholarship offer being pulled, but I’m a little hesitant to think we really need to pile on him and constantly make him “prove” himself.

Morehouse has an article on it now

Sounds good.

Considering his only remaining scholly offer was South Dakota...

I don’t think that was a very hard choice for him to make.

Agreed

Though I keep hearing good things about…where’s USD? Vermillion?

Indeed.

Wherever the hell that is.

I thought you were from Sioux City

Vermillion is in SE South Dakota, pretty close to Sioux City.

I am!

I didn’t spend much time in South Dakota, though. Vermillion sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t have placed it on a map.

You and everybody else
I didn’t spend much time in South Dakota, though
I'm thinking they pulled it because

they need the scholarship for another player. Turning out to be a pretty good class

THE HAWK IS A HAWKEYE

He's Paki the Duece, right?

Wasn’t Paki from CRW?

I thought Paki was from Dubuque Senior

Maybe I’m wrong.

You're thinking of Jayme Murphy

another walk-on running back that excelled at special teams

You stole my clever knee-jerk response...

:(

God I love Brands
Brands didn’t think the travel schedule, so close to this huge showdown, would affect his team.

"Don’t underestimate us. Don’t categorize us that we’ve got to have a charter (airplane)," Brands said. "We’ll hack it out of the wilderness with a machete."
PSD: Hot tip for Maui

Head to Napili bay (just north of Kaanapali) for an afternoon trip. The restaurant on the beach was by far our favorite food on Maui (try the tuna wontons, I insist). Then snorkel in Napili bay. From about 3pm-4pm there’s so many turtles and rays coming in to feed there every day and it’s so uncrowded by people that you feel like you’re in another world.

or to save money

stay home and do hallucinogens. Also going to make you feel like your in another world.

Maui

And if nobody told you, don’t go up to see the sunset on Kilauea without warm clothes. The moment the sun drops below the horizon the temp drops about 40 degrees up there.

I also highly recommend visiting the Tedeschi Winery – the pineapple wine is outstanding.

awesome, thanks
The "ISU is bottom shelf vodka" link is a good, quick link

another highlight: Oklahoma State is Captain Morgan

I'm looking forward to the SEC post
Just got back from Hawaii myself.

I was on Oahu, though. Hopefully it doesn’t rain as much for you as it did for me!

I'm going to Oahu in April.

Anything that I have to do? I’ll be on the north shore for a week, I can’t wait.

If you have kids along for the ride, the zoo is cool, especially if you like turtles. Sealife park or something like that is on the north shore (they filmed 50 First Dates there). We went to Diamond Head this last time I was there, it’s a long dead volcano you can climb. They have stairs and such for some of it. The view from the top is amazing.

Awesome!

No offspring, but animals are cool. Definitely going to check out Diamond Head. Thanks!

Diamond Head is definitely a great thing to see on Oahu.

Pearl Harbor is far and away the best, I was blown away by how good it is. I also very much liked the Bishop Museum (natural history museum) and the Iolani Palace (last queen’s residence) in downtown Oahu

Of course Oahu also is the home of Pearl Harbor, which I have yet to see.

On my next trip, I’m planning on taking Interstate 1 and driving around the island. Yes, Hawaii has INTERSTATE highways.

I'm looking into memorials and museums, I'll definitely be going to Pearl Harbor.
Ricky Stanzi appoves
The only reason I haven't yet been to Pearl Harbor is that mini-Swarley is why I go to Hawaii.

She’s almost 7, so I think most of the reason for a visit to the Arizona Memorial would be over her head. Then again, I could be selling my kiddo short and she would totally get it. It is definitely on the top of my to-do list before she is no longer in Hawaii, though.

There are still great fares to the Big Island from here

So tempted…

I go to Hawaii twice a year now, fares be damned.
"•Don't be jealous, but after today I'll be here "

YEAH WELL I MIGHT GO TO EDINA THIS WEEKEND, SO PFFFT

and next week I’m leaving sunny Southern California for a week in Chicago. I think I’m doing the January trip thing incorrectly.

Well – it’ll make you appreciate where you intend to leave more for the few months remaining that you intend to live there. I think that makes sense.

What?

It’s supposed to be 50 here today!

One of the bank thermometers said 57 yesterday in Coralville.

Not that those are the most accurate, but it sure was an awesome thing to see in January.

Weather channel said it got to 60 in IC

60°!!!!

I believe it, I was outside in a t-shirt.
It was 70 in Denver

Fantastic weather. People were eating on patios during the dinner hour.

Also, it was January 5.

Climate change is real, people.

// NO POLITICS

Real awesome

50 degrees in Iowa! In January!

Sigh

Real bad. 110 for forty straight days in July and August

It's not our fault you live in the devil's taint.
Meaning

Craig James lives on his heavy, pierced scrotum.

I guess he wanted to stay close to home.
Which is just the way Craiggers likes it!

Well, that made me laugh

Those are two far better walk-on RBs than Jason White

And we will probably need them if AIRBHG continues his work

"if AIRBHG continues his work"

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Pretty interesting in that they both had Iowa offers at one point.
You need to read this, if only for the Paul Rhodes gif

Don’t be offended by the ISU rabble though.

the Rhoads gif is a gift to the internets
A testament to BHGP

this link put more pairs of eyes on that page than the link on Cyclone Fanatic.

As we're all aware. People on CF aren't interested in things

That involve more than two complete sentences.

So, apparently Phil Parker and LeVar Woods made a visit to a recruit yesterday

and Woods was introduced as the “new defensive line coach.” It hasn’t actually been announced so it’s not official, but it looks like where this is heading and not surprising at all. Still no clue about the DC position though.

You always have the information
Well, this was out last night too on Twitter

There were a few that tweeted and retweeted it. Hawkeye Report has an article about the recruit on their front page, and it’s in there.

But you do the compiling job.

I tell people that I get all my news from Captain n Diet Coker. Sure I get strange looks, but they are the truly weird ones, because they don’t know all the important things happening in the world.

Also, our Indian (sub-continent) lab tech just told me the following:

St. Louis is just like Lubbock.

There was incredulity and some rebuke.

Well your comment above about being 110 for 40 straight days in July and August in Lubbock

was pretty much what St Louis was like. So, he’s not totally wrong.

I won't hear any of it until Lubbock has their own Nelly
Where can I watch the Okie St. dual Saturday?
Carver
That'd be ideal. What about Dallas?
Nope, I think it's at Carver
I am watching it in Lubbock

just a 5 hour jaunt.

or on your couch, if you live in Iowa.

IPTV has it live

BTN.com has it too, correct?
Yes.

It’s on normal TV in Iowa on IPTV.

For everyone else, it’s on video.BTN.com or Hawkeye All-Access over the interwebs.

Morehouse wrote about Brian Ferentz and Malloy today

Brian Ferentz and the Penn State hire

Malloy fully committed to walking on at Iowa

I would be dumbfounded if B Ferentz was the next Pats' OC.

I know he’s a rising star in the profession, but wow, that would be quite a leap forward. Even if Brady does all the real work for that offense.

I am curious to see if he goes anywhere, though.

Iowa might be getting another from IWCC

not sure if this kid is a walk-on or offered a ride.

Eric Simmons, 6’3" 295 Lb Center

originally from Madrid, Iowa

Can he play defense?
I know, right?
All I wanted for Christmas was some defensive linemen.

Stupid Santa Claus.

me too

especially the JUCO-that-can-practice-and-play-right-away variety

Too bad we missed on the kid out west

Sheffield was his name, I believe. Probably would’ve started at end right away.

He would have been a nice get, yeah.
McCaffery PC going on now

Iowa/Ohio State game notes

About 1,400 tickets left for Ohio State-Iowa; 4,000 for wrestling dual

RT @ajbrenner11: McCaffery: I’ve been so impressed with Hawk fans, they’ve been so loyal. I hope its a sellout
RT @ajbrenner11: McCaffery: No way we could sit Basabe and have that kind of success last year
RT @ajbrenner11: McCaffery: High praise for Devon Archie and his role in Iowa’s 2-3 zone defense at Minnesota
RT @ajbrenner11: Fran McCaffery: You can’t be satisfied with playing with people. What can we do to win? We’ve shown we can play with anybody.
Interesting that this is the highest scoring team we've had since 97-98
It doesn't surprise me.

Lickliter wanted the game played at a snail’s pace and we didn’t really run a lot onder [Redacted], either.

I fully expect the Iowa offensive stats under Fran to resemble the Iowa offensive stats under Dr. Tom.

That makes sense

A couple of the early Alford teams could fill it up (00-01 and 01-02), but both also struggled late in the year for various reasons so their averages probably dipped.

I’d be 100% ok with Iowa’s offensive stats resembling those under Davis.

It's funny that Alford is called redacted, but you use Lickliter's name freely.

I know that’s the gag, but Lickliter was the biggest disaster of a coach of any team I have followed in my 80 years on this earth.

Maybe we need to have [Redacted II].
I've always felt that it was [Redacted] more because he was a gaping asshole.

Lickliter was a nice enough guy, just a coaching disaster.

And a nepotism disaster

I always thought it was as much about how [Redacted] hated us as much as we hated him on his way out the door. Lickliter just seemed defeated. Beaten. Whipped. Lost confidence in himself. And hkobb is right – [Redacted] is an asshole.

There's a new commit
RT @HawkeyeCoachEJ: Very excited about the new member of our #Hawkeye family.

not sure if it’s this Simmons kid or someone else

I'd guess either him or one of the QBs they're targeting

Patton Robinette

Ferentz just visited him yesterday

very good guess, imo

That name sounds like something the EA name generator would spit out.
Robinette?

Sounds more like a doo-wop backup group

Patton and the Robinettes!

Playing the Englert on January 15th!

I want an Oswalt Robinette to come with him

Would be the best recruiting class ever.

We need more Lester’s too. Lester Erb is an awesome name, but we need a player named Lester.

Not much football skill in that combo, but we'd have the best player skits in the B10
Funniest team in the country

No doubt about it

If it was the Simmons kid, can't he say who it is?

JUCO’s can sign now, and once the commits signed on Signing Day last year EJ did say who they were. Just totally speculating here, but it would seem like it would be someone else that they can’t quite say who yet since they can technically say when a JUCO signs.

ah yes, very good point
Good grief that was a jumbled post, but glad you understood it

The Captain has kicked off Friday early?

Unfortunately, no

Sitting here listening to muzak while waiting for a stupid conference call to start. They’re late.

I love conference calls (no video, please). I pay almost no attention and do other things.

Pretty much

Unless I know I’ll be heavily involved in the conversation, most of the time I just do other things.

I suppose it might be that Simmons has told Iowa he's coming but hasn't officially signed his scholarship yet.

Or maybe it’s someone else entirely.

that, or EJ has said before

he likes sending our the “new member” tweets just to watch the fallout

It's not Simmons
I think it's gotta be Robinette
That Wisconsin link I posted was kinda old (2 days)

Bielema has quite the challenge replacing coaches ahead

UW losing Konz, maybe Rudolph

Woof

that’s a lot of brain drain in Madison. Wonder if Bielema is pissed that Chryst is taking so many of his assistants with him to Pitt?

I can't for the life of me understand why Ball is hanging around

Lots of talent is leaving (not just players, either). He’s a running back and their shelf-life is limited. Why take another 300 or so carries at this level when 1) you can go make some money, and 2) you’re one hit away from not playing again? Was he disappointed in the draft grade the NFL people gave him? Take the money, Montee.

Seems really stupid for him to hang around next year. I get their line restocks faster than ours, but they’ve lost a TON of NFL guys on the line from the last two years – Carimi, Moffitt, Konz, Ogelsby, and Zeitler.

Re: the coaches – I’d certainly be upset if I were a fan, and I can’t imagine Bielema is thrilled either. They’ve lost a ton of coaches up there in two weeks’ time.

Yours wasn't posted when I started typing my screed.

I wholly concur, Nickhawk08.

And I didn't even consider the QB turnover

No Wilson, the kid from Notre Dame (I know, I know; he’s a marginal player) chose KU instead of Wisconsin…might be a long year for the QB, Ball, and White. Teams are going to stack the box against Ball and White next year. No one will be afraid of Jon freaking Budmayr.

That Leaders division race for next year is just one giant clusterfuck

OSU might be good, but they can’t go the B1G championship or to a bowl.

OMHR FOR INDY OR BUST
Apparently...

The NFL “Draft Advisory Board”…whatever the hell that is…told Ball that he was a 3rd round pick at best.

Ball’s a good power back..but he’s a lot like Shonn Greene—huge power..speed is so-so though.

Greene went 3rd round to the Jets back in 09 and he hasn’t done to bad for himself…

So for Ball to hold out for one more year, isn’t likely going to do much for his draft stock unless he turns into the next coming of Adrian Peterson next year.

My guess is he had some good counsel

On what he could do to improve the rating year-to-year. I bet he’s locked himself into a “beast mode” plan. I mean, think about how much he improved over one off-season? The upside with him is tremendous.

Umm, I hope someone told Moneyball.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Monte Ball is coming back. There’s too much uncertainty on Wisconsin’s offense next year. New linemen, new coordinator, new QB….

Yes, yes, I know what he said about the draft advisory board’s estimation of his stock: 3rd round But, c’mon, he’d have to win the Heisman next year to move up into the 1st round.

Remember: injuries happen and the run game is dependent on a lot of moving pieces.

// also, if he said anything about getting his degree, I missed it.
// that’s an accomplishment to be sure but I don’t think it’s part of the decision

Wouldn't matter if he wins the Heisman

He aint getting into the 1st, unless he somehow manages to drop about .2 or more off his 40. Only gamebreaking-type RBs go in the 1st these days, and that doesn’t describe him.

At least...

You’re not this poor kid… who managed to piss off his mom on national TV by announcing he was going to Alabama instead of LSU.

Kid announces he’s going to Bama…then mom looks in the camera and says “Geaux Tigers”… Ouch!!!

Rodney Coe remains focused on Iowa

Per Mas Casa

Jesus Christo..

Coe is 6’3, 285?? Get that big boy on the goddamn D-line!

your reading skills are not good
This made me laugh

Hot damn, is he a big RB, though.

to be fair, he looks to be 285 in that photo.

big RB indeed.

Good to hear!
John Clay Redux.

I am so excited.

Aaron White remembers being passed over

"Aaron White remembers being passed over"

I thought this was going to be about him overcoming his ginger-ness.

His is the story about the triumph of the human spirit.

// That’s how I pitched every idea to the movie studios one summer.

Suit: Tell me more about this “lesbian zombie bildungsroman” idea of yours.
Me: Umm, would you believe it’s about the triumph of human spirit?
Suit: … Interesting.

Is it about how the lesbians go from girlhood to womanhood and learn a Very Important Life Lesson about not needing to eat brains?
Admittedly.

Yours is more fully (rotten) fleshed out than mine.

Passed over by the pigmentation fairy

I now need a better name for that fairy. Pigmontius? Darkly Duster? Phobius Solis?

FOTP Fight for Iowa is guessing the new recruit is this guy

Allen Cross

running back from Maryland

stats and stuff

No offers listed on Rivals.

Seems like a bit of a reach. Oh wait, his hometown is Long Reach, Maryland.

Best of luck to the kid and Go Hawks!

plus

the kid is only 5’8" 160

FFI saw a tweet from a friend of the kids, bout a good a guess as any I suppose

I'll bet Canzeri will be stoked.

He won’t be the tiniest guy on the team anymore.

HA

TAKE THAT, STONY BROOK

YOU CAN SUCK IT, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY!
