The Hawkeye football team is gaining a walk-on running back. Andre Dawson, formerly of Cedar Rapids Washington and most recently Iowa Western Community College, will join the Hawkeyes at the semester. Dawson originally committed to Northern Iowa out of high school. He took a red shirt his freshman season at UNI and then decided to take "a different path in life."
Dawson is a big guy, 6'2" 200 pounds. When he committed to UNI his high school coach, Tony Lombardi, said, "UNI is going to be getting a Shonn Greene-type back." At IWCC he joined former Hawkeye commit Rodney Coe in the backfield, another big bruising rusher. If he ever makes it off the scout team with the Hawks could depend on if he stays at running back. Dawson is open to changing positions.
Iowa Western Football 2011 - Andre Dawson #34 RB (via ReiverFootball)
The Hawkeyes received a verbal commitment from Sioux City Heelan running back Michael Malloy back in July. He had a scholarship offer from Iowa but now will have to walk-on next season if he is to stick with the Hawkeyes. Malloy had legal issues over the summer and plead guilty to a misdemeanor, obstructing a peace officer. He was suspended the early part of the high school football season and then suffered a season ending ACL injury. Malloy had been the only in-state high school player to accept a scholarship offer from Iowa.
Also on the recruiting front, the Hawkeyes missed out on four-star prospect Quanzell Lambert. The linebacker from Sicklerville, New Jersey, gave his verbal commitment to Rutgers. His final three were Rutgers, Iowa and Nebraska. He played with current Hawkeye Quinton Alston but ultimately decided to play close to home.

It appears that Penn State has found their football coach. Current New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien is expected to take the job following the Patriots' season. There is an interesting Iowa slant here. Brian Ferentz is the tight ends coach for New England and could move up the ladder. Ferentz is only 29 years old but Mike Reiss, of ESPN.com, isn't counting Ferentz out of the running for New Enlgand's newest OC.

The Bird Cult - January 6, 2012
Pulling Malloy's scholarship is interesting, has KF ever done that before to a kid who committed?
It seemed a bit sketchy until I remembered the legal stuff. Although, still slightly sketchy.
Ill Jukes - January 6, 2012
could be a good move, the kid really wanted iowa, doesn’t really deserve a scholarship after his mess, and probably has him a little desperate following his ACL. Make him come in hungry. Still could be a great football player.
Good move picking up Dawson, awesome name
waterboy31321 - January 6, 2012
I feel bad for him for his knee injury. If it was surgically repaired, you have to think he’s redshirting no matter what next fall. I assume he’s an Iowa resident, so in state tuition + trouble with the law + resulting partial suspension + knee problems = walk-on status seems deserved.
txhawkeye - January 6, 2012
Actually
I seem to recall the kid not being that high on Iowa during the recruiting process. I think the kid screwed up, and don’t really have that much problem with his scholarship offer being pulled, but I’m a little hesitant to think we really need to pile on him and constantly make him “prove” himself.

PSD: Hot tip for Maui
Head to Napili bay (just north of Kaanapali) for an afternoon trip. The restaurant on the beach was by far our favorite food on Maui (try the tuna wontons, I insist). Then snorkel in Napili bay. From about 3pm-4pm there’s so many turtles and rays coming in to feed there every day and it’s so uncrowded by people that you feel like you’re in another world.

Anything that I have to do? I’ll be on the north shore for a week, I can’t wait.

If you have kids along for the ride, the zoo is cool, especially if you like turtles. Sealife park or something like that is on the north shore (they filmed 50 First Dates there). We went to Diamond Head this last time I was there, it’s a long dead volcano you can climb. They have stairs and such for some of it. The view from the top is amazing.

RossWB - January 6, 2012
That makes sense
A couple of the early Alford teams could fill it up (00-01 and 01-02), but both also struggled late in the year for various reasons so their averages probably dipped.

I can't for the life of me understand why Ball is hanging around
Lots of talent is leaving (not just players, either). He’s a running back and their shelf-life is limited. Why take another 300 or so carries at this level when 1) you can go make some money, and 2) you’re one hit away from not playing again? Was he disappointed in the draft grade the NFL people gave him? Take the money, Montee.
Seems really stupid for him to hang around next year. I get their line restocks faster than ours, but they’ve lost a TON of NFL guys on the line from the last two years – Carimi, Moffitt, Konz, Ogelsby, and Zeitler.
Re: the coaches – I’d certainly be upset if I were a fan, and I can’t imagine Bielema is thrilled either. They’ve lost a ton of coaches up there in two weeks’ time.

Apparently...
The NFL “Draft Advisory Board”…whatever the hell that is…told Ball that he was a 3rd round pick at best.
Ball’s a good power back..but he’s a lot like Shonn Greene—huge power..speed is so-so though.
Greene went 3rd round to the Jets back in 09 and he hasn’t done to bad for himself…
So for Ball to hold out for one more year, isn’t likely going to do much for his draft stock unless he turns into the next coming of Adrian Peterson next year.
FlyingDutchman1 - January 6, 2012
My guess is he had some good counsel
On what he could do to improve the rating year-to-year. I bet he’s locked himself into a “beast mode” plan. I mean, think about how much he improved over one off-season? The upside with him is tremendous.
One_ill_KevinJ - January 7, 2012
Umm, I hope someone told Moneyball.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why Monte Ball is coming back. There’s too much uncertainty on Wisconsin’s offense next year. New linemen, new coordinator, new QB….
Yes, yes, I know what he said about the draft advisory board’s estimation of his stock: 3rd round But, c’mon, he’d have to win the Heisman next year to move up into the 1st round.
Remember: injuries happen and the run game is dependent on a lot of moving pieces.
// also, if he said anything about getting his degree, I missed it.
// that’s an accomplishment to be sure but I don’t think it’s part of the decision
Lukateake - January 6, 2012
Wouldn't matter if he wins the Heisman
He aint getting into the 1st, unless he somehow manages to drop about .2 or more off his 40. Only gamebreaking-type RBs go in the 1st these days, and that doesn’t describe him.

At least...
You’re not this poor kid… who managed to piss off his mom on national TV by announcing he was going to Alabama instead of LSU.
Kid announces he’s going to Bama…then mom looks in the camera and says “Geaux Tigers”… Ouch!!!

I thought this was going to be about him overcoming his ginger-ness.

His is the story about the triumph of the human spirit.
// That’s how I pitched every idea to the movie studios one summer.
Suit: Tell me more about this “lesbian zombie bildungsroman” idea of yours.
Me: Umm, would you believe it’s about the triumph of human spirit?
Suit: … Interesting.

Is it about how the lesbians go from girlhood to womanhood and learn a Very Important Life Lesson about not needing to eat brains?
RossWB - January 6, 2012
Admittedly.
Yours is more fully (rotten) fleshed out than mine.

Passed over by the pigmentation fairy
I now need a better name for that fairy. Pigmontius? Darkly Duster? Phobius Solis?

So wait a minute. This Michael Malloy has
already had run-ins with the police and a torn ACL?
It seems to me that he is almost over-qualified for this program right now.
