Current recruiting process (via CBSSports)
And Iowa is still working the recruiting trail. Prior to the departures of Jon Raymon, Marcus Grant, AJ Derby, Mika'il McCall and Marcus Coker coach Ferentz told the media Iowa was looking to sign around 20 this year. Well, it's obvious now the staff is looking to fill the max (25), or come close.
Iowa has added Alex Kozan, C.J. Beathard and Nate Meier this week. They are still after a few others that will either decide tonight or tomorrow morning. Here is a short list of players still with Iowa in the mix:
Sean Draper - A 6' 160 pound defensive back from Cleveland, Ohio. Draper is a three-star prospect according to Rivals and will decide between Iowa, Pitt and Louisville. It was rumored that Draper would make his verbal commitment known yesterday but now it appears he won't announce until tomorrow. The latest Twitter rumors have Draper as a Louisville lean.
Ian Thomas - A 6'1" 190 pound wide receiver from Maryland. Thomas is a three-star prospect according to Rivals and will decide between Iowa, Rutgers, North Carolina and Virginia. Thomas will announce his decision tomorrow at his high school around 7:00 am CT.
Aaron Curry - A 6'3" 298 pound defensive lineman from Keller, Texas. Curry is a three-star prospect according to Rivals that will decide between Iowa and Nebraska. It's Iowa against their former defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski for this one. Curry is set to announce at his high school tomorrow at 7:00 am.
Terrell Jackson - A 6'3" 255 pound defensive tackle from Columbus, Ohio. Jackson is a three-star prospect according to Rivals that will decide between Pitt and Illinois tomorrow at 9:00 am. Yesterday, it was rumored on Michigan State's Rivals board that Jackson had committed to Iowa. Iowa was in the mix but Jackson was to visit Michigan State and rumored to commit there. Now, the Twitters say Pitt and Illinois. Jackson has been linked to at least four schools in the last 24 hours so I suppose he's still one to watch. Or maybe not?
Iowa was thought to be the leader for New Jersey running back Tevin Shaw but he said yesterday Iowa pulled his offer.
Quanzell Lambert, four-star linebacker from New Jersey, is still committed to Rutgers despite the coaching change. Per Twitter, he may not sign tomorrow but rather get to know Rutgers new coach Kyle Flood before making his final decision.
Those are some names Iowa has been linked to. There could be more, like Jackson's name popping up out of nowhere yesterday. The letters of intent start faxing in tomorrow to Iowa and like last year, they will operate an updating blog with bios and videos of each recruit.
As always, recruiting is fluid and we'll use the comments to add updates if necessary.
More links after the jump.

I'm still pissed Duck
abandoned Chauncey in the middle of New York City. Bastard.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
that was the worst.
therealCatnuts - January 31, 2012
Yeah that was weak sauce
Duck is such a douche. I wish Don wouldn’t have been so drunk and kicked his ass.
mikjones24 - January 31, 2012
I miss Sal. I kept thinking they’d bring him back. His "Bye Bye Birdie

Nice
So much for waiting for tomorrow to announce
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
The pieces fit too perfectly to make anyone believe it was a secret.
I think he realized that shortly after deciding to wait and said, “fuck it, let ’em know.”
The Mexican't - January 31, 2012
Tomorrow at 5pm cst on the CBS Sports Network
is the International Bowl which will include three Hawkeye commits. Garmon, Smith and Ekakitie are there representing the USA! USA! USA!
Here’s a vid including Smith
PSD - January 31, 2012
If you were able to write "Ekakitie" from memory, you might be a creeper.
(It’s OK. You can come with me to the next Creepers Anonymous meeting. We meet in the basement of the old Methodist church. The seats aren’t very comfortable, but the cookies are good.)
RossWB - January 31, 2012
LOL
cookies!
PSD - January 31, 2012
Pfft. Ekakitie is much easier to spell than Kounjdiao was.
(I’m not going to bother spell-checking Cyrus’s last name, just to drive home the point)
The Mexican't - January 31, 2012
I still have to look up Venckus
probably because he’s a lowly three-star/two-star recruit
PSD - January 31, 2012
So, technically Ekakitie and Smith are representing the World
not the USA, but Garmon sure is. Apparently it was a big deal when Smith scored the first TD for the World against the USA in last year’s game.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
I'm slightly terrified of that Georgia cheerleader in the last link.
RossWB - January 31, 2012
I'd be the base of her pyramid.
{rim shot}
For realz. I would not risk saying no to her.
Blackheartnopants - January 31, 2012 via Android app
Think about how small most cheerleaders are
and then think about seeing someone that small being that ripped. Does. Not. Compute.
Enoch - January 31, 2012
Caring is creepy
Apparently she is 5’10". She is probably as big or bigger than the male cheerleaders.
Enoch - January 31, 2012
Does anyone else think that bench pressing 155 isn't a big deal?
I benched 75 in 7th grade and I have terrible upper arm strength (yeah, I know there’s more to it than just upper arm strength). But still, with arms that big, you’d think it’d be more.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
75 and 155
are two entirely different worlds. For a female who refuses to juice, 155 is pretty impressive. I would bet that the average man, who either doesn’t work out or doesn’t do it very seriously, would be able to do 155.
Flakbait - January 31, 2012
ugh
that should be WOULDN’T be able to do 155.
Flakbait - January 31, 2012

There’s gonna be a fat girl that smokes those numbers somewhere out there.

hawkinsandmelrose - January 31, 2012
I haven't figured out what my muscle tendencies are yet.
I’d love to get into running and slim down but it seems that I don’t have the endurance for the long running (yet). I wish I had a higher ratio of slow twitch muscles in relation to the fast twitch muscles. I wonder if muscle groups can be trained to have a different response quality.

Well right now I'm not anywhere close to 5 min miles.
I’m WAY out of shape. Looking to change all that this year. BOOYAH. Wait. This really should be in Ham’dam.
EnergizerHawk - January 31, 2012
right
you can train your muscles but the duration of training required depends on your genetics. Also, there’s limitations obviously. Like you’d never have world class times etc.

EnergizerHawk - January 31, 2012
So is Energizer Hawk the guy in the middle?
Or the Norwegian?
hawkinsandmelrose - January 31, 2012
They can to an extent.
But you’re mostly stuck with what you’re born with. Unless you are some kind of genetic wierdo, your ratio is going to be fine for distance running with the goal of fitness. It just takes awhile to get to where you can keep going for 30 or 40 minutes, which is where I tend to lose interest in the whole affair.
Flakbait - January 31, 2012
Its not that hard to run 10 miles
I do so almost every weekend. And I have no athletic ability whatsoever.

30 pairs of Jeans and only 2 FIT!
Scares the shit out of me
waterboy31321 - January 31, 2012
which begs the question
why is she hanging onto the other 28 pair?
The Bacon Explosion - January 31, 2012
We women have a vain hope that some day we might fit into them again
Pretty sure I have maybe 10 pairs of jeans hanging out in my closet that I haven’t been able to fit in to for years. But I’m working on it!
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
I will say that 28 is a wee bit excessive though
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
also begs the question
WTF is she doing with 30 pairs of jeans? again, excessive.
The Bacon Explosion - January 31, 2012

Enoch - January 31, 2012
no she kills bitches and keeps their jeans
waterboy31321 - January 31, 2012
These things happen
Between the trends on style, fit, color as well as body changes and outfit considerations (wearing flats or high heels could determine your length size as well), it is very possible that every pair is different from the other. I could have a long length, size 8, bootcut, indigo-colored with the ‘whiskered’ look or have a long length, size 8, bootcut, in indigo that has the ‘deconstructed’ look or a long length, size 8, bootcut, indigo-colored that is neither deconstructed nor whiskered or faded or whatever.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
What in the blue hell are "whiskered" jeans
Lycurgus - January 31, 2012
They've got lines just below the pockets that look like wear from sitting over time
As a result, the jeans look like they’ve got whiskers.
“Deconstructed” is probably jeans with holes, most people understand faded jeans.
I’ve always wanted to get a pair of pure denim jeans, but I don’t know that I’m comfortable not ever washing a pair of pants.
The Mexican't - January 31, 2012
You sir, are correct
And I hate deconstructed jeans. I refuse to pay extra money for something when I would normally throw away those jeans that get that many holes (or at least only wear them around them the house or for gardening or whatever).
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012

I have 4 pairs of jeans. 2 with holes that are really comfortable and 2 without holes that are gradually getting holes and getting more comfortable.
ClaybornSmash - January 31, 2012
I think I probably own 5 or 6 pairs of jeans, but that's just because they've accumulated.
I’ve got 2 pairs of jeans for work and then a few pair that are more comfortable but would look stupid in a business casual office.
The Mexican't - January 31, 2012
Let's see... how many pairs of Levi 510s do I have...
5 pairs in blue jeans
4 twill/canvas (black, two shades of brown, gray) – I’m wearing the gray pair at work now.
I love skinny jeans like 510s, although all they are is the 505 cut that was popular in the 1980s…
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
I have two pairs of jeans.
When those fall apart I’ll buy two more pairs.

I'll bet they're Costco brand too ;)
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Me too
I used to wear strictly carhart, but even I know those aren’t for wearing out amongst people. So now I just have a couple of pairs of Polo jeans. I like them. They are well-made and fit pretty well. My mom used to buy me those american eagle jeans that just dissolved in the washing machine
Lycurgus - January 31, 2012
2 pair

therealCatnuts - January 31, 2012
Excellent point. I retract my teasing about Costco then.
Same thing, these Levi 510s – $50 a pair (or less on sale) and they’re good…
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Ah, a fashion thread. YES
Does it impact my Man Card that I love clothes?
I have a serious amount of Patagonia, Kuhl and The North Face in my closet… and (for a guy) a lot of shoes…
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Any 66 North?
That stuff is stupid expensive
Lycurgus - January 31, 2012
Nope, none of that.
But I’m also a serial donator (to the Sacramento SSPCA). I’ve been “upgrading” my collection of fleece and outdoor gear. I’m at REI a lot, buy stuff at backcountry.com… I usually drive to The North Face outlet store in Berkelely 3-4 times a year – its only a 75 mile drive. Worth it, prices are KILLER. And they let me take my dog into the store (local ordinance :) ).

Do they look good on her?
My GF will just bitch and bitch and bitch about how its impossible to find a good pair of pants. She has a great butt, I tell her just to wear leggings and black knee boots – I bought her two pairs of riding boots – Nine West and Keen…
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Oh they look good on her.
I feel like bragging about how hot my wife is would be out of line, but yeah. She’s a looker. I’m very lucky.
therealCatnuts - January 31, 2012
Its OK to brag
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
To be fair,
it can definitely be hard to find a good pair of pants, even with all the options out there. They’ve been getting better at it the last 10 years or so, but depending on body type it can be difficult. I, for one, am tall for a girl (but not outrageously so at 5’9) and thus need long pants. A lot of stores don’t carry tall pants in the store though and only sell them online (unless they get returned in the store). Plus, since I’m not that tall, a lot of the times the tall pants are too long but the regular pants are high waters on me. So if I find a fit I like I tend to get multiple styles of it.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
My wife is 6'1". She feels your pain.
therealCatnuts - January 31, 2012

The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Sheesh, it has to be worse for her
And don’t even get me started on shirts. At least the trends for that have been longer shirts the last few years which I am forever grateful for.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
We are both glad to see skinny jeans back
She did not like the flares/boot cuts… she’d dig up old Levi straight legs at the thrift stores (I know, we are products of the 80s). She’s not someone who is going to wear a 3-5" spike heel with her jeans, so she doesn’t like them dragging the floor (However, espadrille wedges are a different story, but she prefers to wear those with a dress or skirt – she has GREAT legs…)
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
See, my GF has a different problem
She’s 5’3" and you’d think petites, but, she has Type 1 diabetes and even though it didn’t manifest itself until she was 6, it stunted her growth. She’s a SM in the butt, but she’s a XL on top. Linebacker shoulders (man can she swim!). So she needs petite bottoms but huge tops. It creates all sorts of problems in dresses and tops… she’s not well endowed, either, although I have offered to pop for aftermarket parts if that would help :p
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Men's pants = easy
you have a 34 inch waist and 34 inch in-seem? Need to adjust one of those by an inch or two? Easy. Then those are your pants. Brands fit differently, figure that out and your done.

Anyone got the good dirt on this?
Is he just butthurt or did Wilson eff up and forget to call him back when they decided they didn’t have an offer for him anymore?
SomeJerkPoster - January 31, 2012
Seems like there was some miscommunication btw Shaw/his coach and Iowa somewhere.
My guess is there was a spot for one more RB and Hill got it when he flipped from ISU. How well was that stated to Shaw? According to his coach, it would seem not very well. But we’ve only got one side of the story here, too.
(Of course there’s also the question of why we’re capping RB recruiting at two given the nature of the AIRBHG problem, but that’s a whole ’nother kettle of fish.)
RossWB - January 31, 2012
Maybe they really like the two walk-on RBs
I think this might be a major factor, actually.

Rivals had him at 4* following his junior year. I think he wound up at UNI and then a Juco mostly because of grades.

It just seems really odd to me that the coach would lash out like that if we didn't screw up on our end somehow.

Lashing out unnecessarily seems pretty likely, actually.
therealCatnuts - January 31, 2012
Seems like bad business for him, though.
I can’t imagine that helps if he has interest in getting into college coaching someday or getting some of his less viable players looks in the future.

Some people are simply turd stupid when it comes to image management
The Bird Cult - January 31, 2012
Not sure what happened
But I’m pretty sure his offer was on the table since when, August? There’s no way the Iowa coaches didn’t say “Look, we understand you need some time to decide but if someone else comes along and they’re ready to commit, you might lose your offer.”
mikjones24 - January 31, 2012
This is where I come down.
The kid has to know that it’s not one kid, one offer. If he wanted to come here, commit. If he is holding out for other offers, it’s not going to last forever. It’s an ugly side of recruiting, but reality.

You do an awesome job so I am only kidding but when people say thanks and in return get “no problem”, it’s my biggest pet peeve.

I love the looks back at top recruits and where they are now
8 out of the top 25 from that year current in the NFL sounds pretty darn good, actually.

Decoding recruitnik speak.
(via)
As my brother said, “He fits their system well” is code for “They have no RBs, he is a RB.”

WHERE'S TYLER SASH?
RossWB - January 31, 2012
Dammit Antrel Rolle
This was your perfect time to throw up the U!
mikjones24 - January 31, 2012
This should be the first thing our recruiters hand a family on a visit.
“Hi, my names LeVar. Here’s a photo we thought you’d enjoy as much as we do. I’ll be waiting for your call.”
hawkinsandmelrose - January 31, 2012
not the video of him getting totally destroyed on that blind side hit Dobbs vs the 49ers though.

IAinCA - January 31, 2012
Dobbs isn't playing in Indianapolis on Sunday.
Sash is.
“Hi, my name’s LeVar. Here’s a video of former Hawkeye great Tyler Sash getting laid out the 2012 NFC Championship Game. Completely destroyed. But, he’s fine. He’s a little tougher than the rest of the players and walks 2 inches taller. He’s a Hawkeye, and he is the second Hawk in two years to win a Super Bowl. I’ll be waiting for your call.”

Girls Generation
On the Late Show with David Letterman tonight. No word on Iowa helmets being present.

For a second there I thought we could embed Youtube videos in comments now.

I began to furiously click things and then I peed a little.

Seeing that our Defensive Commits seem to be okay with coaching "changes"
What’s the significance? Either they aren’t concerned or they know and are happy. Or maybe the fans place too much emphasis on the impact coaching changes have on the decision making process.
Who knows, but it’s obvious we’ll know who our new players are before we get to call Phil Parker our DC. Either way, I have no issues with the way things have been handled.
hawkinsandmelrose - January 31, 2012
scott dochterman just published an article
That says iowa increased its recruiting budget by 100 gs. Cant link from phone. Looks like they are getting a solid roi but of course, time will tell.

That budget should be basically unlimited by all practical standards
If they want a kid and think they can get him, a difference in recruiting budget between $200K and $300K is ludicrous in an $80M program.

AMIRITE?
SomeJerkPoster - January 31, 2012
That looks like Fiscal year 2011 - i.e. ending on June 30, 2011.
I’d be interested in seeing FY 2012 numbers on this too.
EnergizerHawk - January 31, 2012
Is that just football or total?
Because I imagine the bump in basketball recruiting from Lickliter to Fran was pretty substantial

Two new walk-ons
that brings to the total to six
Jeremy Nelson for Heelan
and…
Steve Ferentz
PSD - January 31, 2012
Steve walking on has been a forgone conclusion for awhile, I think
Glad they didn’t use a scholarship on him, at least. By most accounts he’s pretty far behind where he brothers were at this point, and I think his dad can probably handle the tuition.
NorseHawk - January 31, 2012
Don't kids of university staff members get free tuition anyway?

Draper is Iowa bound
Per Iowa’s rivals site.
this is probably Iowa’s best endgame recruiting wise in a long time, and we are doing it without an official D coordinator. bravo Iowa.

Sounds like he did a lot of recruiting for us.
Sounds like a great leader, and a great person too.

I love kids like that
Nico Law last year was active in getting guys he knew in the DC Beltway area and Fleming this year. Gotta love kids who are fully committed to the program.

What're the odds that Thomas picks Iowa?
The Mexican't - January 31, 2012
I think it's probably 60-40 in favor of Rutgers now that they appear to be keeping most of their staff
