A week long vacation was followed by a nightmare of electronic darkness. I'll spare you the gory details and assure you that smart phones are no substitute for a fully working computer. The technology is nice but it's hardly methadone for full blown Internet addict.
I've been somewhat out of the loop and am playing catch up. This post will devaite from the previous format and we'll rejoin regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. For now, it's scatterbrain snippet style. I apologize in advance if some of this news is dated or repetitive. I want to make sure I cover it all some of the news.
We'll start with now former Hawks and their performances in post season all-star events.
Marvin McNutt's performance at Senior Bowl practices may have moved him up on some draft lists. Marvin measured 6'2.5" without cleats and separated himself from the pack despite not flashing coveted speed. Iowa's all-time everything receiver plans to work on his footwork and speed leading up to the combine and draft.
Shaun Prater played in the East-West Shrine game and also helped his draft stock. Prater was a standout on the victorious East defense. Sporting News pegged Prater as one who improved their draft stock the most. SN thinks he might move to a second round pick.
NFL.com released it's mock draft 2012 version 2.0 last weekend. Iowa's Riley Reiff is predicted to the Carolina Panthers as the eighth pick overall. If the Panthers don't take Reiff here, former Hawkeye line coach Joe Philbin and his Dolphins have the next pick. If neither select Reiff either the Bills or Chiefs, at #10 and #11 will.
ESPN's Mel Kiper listed Reiff as his #2 offensive tackle in the draft. Kiper also listed his Top 5's for returning seniors. Micah Hyde is the only Hawkeye listed. Hyde is Kiper's #3 corner.
Moving on, it's the week of National Signing Day (Wednesday). Hopefully Iowa will release their signing day blog like last season (they publish a bio and videos as the signed letters are faxed in). Last night Iowa scored a big verbal commit from Alex Kozan. The Omaha World-Herald is also reporting Iowa landed 8-man footballer Nate Meier from Fremont-Mills, IOWA. There are still offers out there, Iowa might not be done just yet.
Texas defensive tackle Aaron Curry is down to Iowa and Nebraska. He has set his announcement at his High School Wednesday morning (7:00 am).
Iowa received a visit from a high school quarterback that already verbally committed to Ole Miss. CJ Beathard is a three star prospect on Rivals. No word yet on if his visit persuaded him to switch his commitment.
Iowa football now has confirmed four preferred walk-ons for next season. They are Michael Malloy, Alex Imming, Will Kincart and Andre Dawson. Malloy had a scholarship offer but now has to walk-on and earn his scholarship. Dawson has been to Northern Iowa and Iowa Western Community College.
Alex Imming was a second team all-Western Iowa quarterback at Sioux City East. He'll come to Iowa as an "athlete" and stands 6'3" and 205 pounds. Imming, unfortunately, lost his father shortly after committing to Iowa. Here is a touching story from Larry Peterson, of the Creston News.
Will Kincart is from Bloomfield, Iowa. He's a 6'3" 235 pound lineman that projects to either side. He could be Iowa's next long snapper.
Hoops. The Hawkeye men's team left their defense at home last night as they allowed dunk after dunk against Indiana. The Hoosiers made the most of the Hawkeye's matador defense, scoring 100 points in a Big Ten game for the first time since Grunge.
You can watch head coach Fran McCaffery's post-game press conference. McCaffery called it "a very disappointing effort defensively by our guys." Josh Oglesby, who added a career high 24 points, said "our defense was horrible." That it was Josh. That..... It...... Was.

I never knew Ricky Davis was known as "Get Buckets"
RossWB - January 30, 2012
it's not "get your own rebounds?"
PSD - January 30, 2012
Would you expect any other name?
Certainly not “get assists” or “gots defense”

No...
But “Get Buckets” sounds suspiciously like a self-appointed nickname.

Again, would you expect any differently from Mr. Ricky Davis?
I have to say that Ricky and the stories about Ricky have made my life better as a Hawk fan over the last 10 years or so. I especially enjoyed the story from the BHGPer that golfed with him (can’t remember off top of my head who that was, but TFJ to that person)

the kid is good
waterboy31321 - January 30, 2012
I'll repost what I wrote in another thread
He sounds like a good kid and a possible diamond-in-the-rough type, but this makes me a little nervous
This could mean he’s versatile, or it could mean that he really doesn’t fit in anywhere (jack of all trades, master of none).HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
I imagine the reason they're looking at him at RB is because that's where he wants to play.
This is another Derby situation with a lower profile recruit. He’s already a big kid and I’d be surprised if he stays at RB for a full year. If he can carry the weight then I could understand the move to DE, but to me it seems more likely that he moves to LB. Of course, I don’t know shit so I could be completely wrong.
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
If he knows what's good for him
he’ll make the switch from RB immediately. I’ve got to assume, however, that the coaches envision him a position other than RB, I can’t imagine they like his prospects at RB more than they do Tevin Shaw who wasn’t able to commit due to Iowa apparently being out of scholarships.
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
When Morehouse tweeted about the commitment I jokingly asked when he'd be moved to LB.
Morehouse’s response was basically, “As soon as he sets foot on campus.” 235 seems very large for a RB, especially considering he’s not even spent any time in a D1 S&C program. After spending a season with Doyle, I’d assume that he could cultivate at least 10-15 pounds of mass. How many D1 programs send out a 250-lb RB?
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
TO be fair
I think Barkley Hill got the scholarship that would have gone to Tevin Shaw, not that Meier is the RB the coaches took instead of Shaw. I’m quite certain he changes position immediately.
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
How many people are reporting the Herrmann hire?
I’ve only seen the one.
Does he have any ties to this staff outside of standing across from them during his stint as Michigan’s DC until 2005?
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
To be fair, that's about as many ties as Soup had to Iowa/KF before he was hired here, too.
I don’t know if Herrman is the guy or not, but if he is it WOULD explain the interminable delay in announcing a new DC.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
Fair enough.
Obviously ties to a staff aren’t a requirement for a hiring, and certainly does jibe with the “waiting for an NFL coach” storyline from a couple weeks ago. I’d love to see how his defenses at Michigan performed during his time there. Obviously a national title and Assitant Coach of the Year award aren’t really anything to complain about, but I was barely a CFB fan during his time at Michigan so I know nothing about him.
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
Ask
And you shall receive That has back to 1999.
Using the info from that link and the highly accurate method of “looking at the total defense ranking” I found the following
2005 – 36
2004 – 33
2003 – 11
2002 – 42
2001 – 12
2000 – 74
1999 – Michigan not listed. IIRC, this was the year Lloyd Carr took a Mike Leach correspondance course and decided Michigan didn’t need no stinkin’ defense!
Flakbait - January 30, 2012
It's also worth remembering
that after the NC in 97, Michigan was prone to be a team that could be counted on to solidly underperform.
So on the surface, I would not be excited about him being hired.
Flakbait - January 30, 2012
Sounds like he would fit in perfectly with our coaching staff then!
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012

What about "bend-but-don't-break???"
SCORING defense (I couldn’t find any rankings for 1998/9, so I found the ppg average and guessed a ranking based on the last 5 seasons).
2005 – 45th
2004 – 42nd
2003 – 11th
2002 – 26th
2001 – 9th
2000 – 15th
1999 – 21ppg ~ 22nd
1998 – 18ppg ~ 12th
1997 – 1st (best year statistically of any team in the B1G since 1985)
Quite a bit better looking, IMO.

Seriously, I’m glad Garmon is apparently healthy, and I wish him the best whether he’s a Hawk or not. But KF and co. do seem to be going out on a bit of a limb with signing him.
WaterlooChazz - January 30, 2012

CarolinaHawk - January 30, 2012
I knew about Garmon and cancer
was wondering where the info about Tevin Shaw being told there were no more schollies left was coming from. Might shed some light on who the coaches do, and do not, expect to land. Also, as Ross pointed out in the Caring is Creepy article earlier today, Iowa is already over the 85-man limit.
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
it was on Rivals today
PSD - January 30, 2012
Just read the article
kind of shocking how that all worked out, especially since the kid seems really high on Iowa
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
It sucks for the kid, but that article also seemed a little weird.
His coach said Iowa had seven openings and was looking at nine guys and was bent out of shape that Iowa told Shaw his offer was no longer good even though they haven’t added seven guys since last week. Even if what he’s saying about the openings and such is true (no idea), it doesn’t follow that those seven spots were first come, first serve, no matter what position a guy played. Iowa may have only wanted to take one more RB and got Hill to flip from ISU in the meantime — hence, no offer left for Shaw.
Also kind of strange that it seems like he was down to Iowa as his only remaining big-time offer.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
True
to all of that. I was under the impression, however, that he still had an offer to PSU
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
Yeah, no idea what offers he really has at this point.
His Rivals profile lists Iowa, Maryland, UMass, Akron, Penn State, South Carolina, Temple, and Towson (aside: that’s a pretty eclectic collection of schools), but the article makes it pretty clear that the UMass, Akron, and Temple offers are no good and gives the impression that the others aren’t either.
I think this story is a good indicator of how unreliable some of the info on recruiting sites can be, especially when it comes to offers. And I don’t blame the Rivals or Scout or ESPN guys for that — they get their info from the recruits themselves or occasionally from their coaches/families, so it can certainly get skewed. Recruits have been known to inflate their interest from schools. (Not saying that this is what Shaw is doing — I really don’t know — just spitballing.) And it makes sense on their end since if other schools think a bigger school is recruiting a kid, it could pique their interest and get them involved with the player. This whole process is just so rife with self-interest and deception.
Caring is not only creepy, it’s really complicated. (And confusing.)
RossWB - January 30, 2012
And
that’s why you take the Iowa offer before the last two weeks of recruiting season.

PSD - January 30, 2012
The MasCasa article linked above included them.
So five left?
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
Morehouse's 21 includes the Jucos
which may be counted against another year. Plus, Staggs got a scholarship for next year. The issue isn’t as much the 25 for this year, it’s the fact that we’re up against the 85-overall limit
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
That's what I was asking in the first place.
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
According to Tevin Shaw's coach (so take it with a grain of salt)...
Iowa said they had 7 spots open for 9 guys as of last week. Since then we’ve added Hill, Meier, Kozan, and now Beathard I guess. So that would suggest there are three more spots left. If we filled all those we’d be at 89 scholarship players, according to the Rivals scholarship distribution chart — 85 is the max.
As far as the 25-man limit… not counting the JUCOs*, Iowa has 20 commits so far in this year’s class if we include Kozan and Beathard. So that would be room for 5 more.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
So we're already oversigned by one?
…so I guess the real question is who’s leaving?
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
That is the $64,000 question.
Since I don’t think Iowa moved to the SEC, nor do I think Saban or Nutt took over as head coach here, I have to assume that this oversigning is being done because they know the spots are going to be available soon.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
Or
They know some of the recruits won’t qualify.
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
Also, does the distribution include Reiff and/or the recent transfers?
I don’t have a rivals subscription.
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
Yeah, the Rivals chart is updated very quickly (it already includes Meier, for instance).
Reiff, Derby, Coker, McCall have all been removed.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
No, that's a chance they take
Iowa (and the B1G schools) are barred from signing more than 25 to a single class except in extreme circumstances. Our issue isn’t the 25, but the 85-overall limit. Basically we are 85 minus this year’s seniors plus Reiff, Coker, Marcus Grant
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
oh, and McCall
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
and Derby
PSD - January 30, 2012
Yeah, I'm aware of how it works.
But let’s say you’re at 64 scholarship players. You can still sign 4 more than you have a scholarships for in case you have some recruits who con’t qualify.
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
Have to distinguish between
“oversigning”—taking more than the 25 allowed per year—and having too many guys on the roster. Right now, the latter is the issue for us while the former is not yet an issue, but is getting very tight.
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
True, it's not although really just "oversigning" of a slightly different flavor.
The end result is the same: you have more kids than you really have scholarships to give them.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
There's been rumblings of Jaleel Johnson

RossWB - January 30, 2012
Get out, Johnny Mullings
Or Mossbrucker, I guess, but it is adorable when he warms up with the QBs so I hope he stays
Alternatively why the heck did we give a scholarship to Jason White?
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
We gave a scholarship to Jason White that could have gone to Tevin Shaw? #HeadAsplode
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012 via mobile
maybe they saw Shaw as a defensive back
and feel they are getting Draper
PSD - January 30, 2012
Doesn't matter. Jason White is pretty much the definition of "never going to contribute."
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012 via mobile
yes, because it's so easy to tell who will contribute when or how in college sports
rupertj - January 30, 2012
I think it's pretty clear you don't have much to contribute
When you’re a junior and you’ve pretty clearly been passed on the depth chart by six recuits who got to campus after you. But hey, if he proves me wrong and goes for any significant amount of yardage next season, give him a scholarship then, by all means. I just think it’s pretty silly to give someone who is already on campus and unlikely to contribute in place of bringing better talent into the program.
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012 via mobile
well, I was just as much saying that you have no idea how the other guy will play out
You seem to be advocating running players off
rupertj - January 30, 2012
...Where would Jason White run off to?
99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne - January 30, 2012
Huh?
He didn’t have a scholarship to begin with, how is continuing not to give him one “running him off”?
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
rupert's just offended that you dare question Ferentz
tyger1147 - January 30, 2012

rupertj - January 31, 2012
You're just an apologist douche, Rupert.
Just embrace it. Tyger is always right.
/this is all sarcasm, as you know I tend to agree with you quite often, Rupert.
WaterlooChazz - January 31, 2012
To be fair to me, I've admitted to being wrong lots of times.
I understand why you wouldn’t see that or remember it though. i don’t go around bragging about how I admitted I was wrong.
tyger1147 - February 1, 2012
I have zero problem with it
maybe he is a locker room leader? maybe he pulls a rudy and works his ass off twice as hard as everyone else. who knows?
justsomehawkeyefan - January 30, 2012
We still need him to be the spittin image of a variety of scrambling QBs.
He was once The Denard, you know.
Also, he played in the bowl game.
Eyeheartfreedumb - January 30, 2012
That was Colin Sleeper
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
This would be super if we had extra scholarships to give
If we’re going to be brushing up against the limit I would rather spend them on guys who might actually have a chance at being good college football players
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
He's been here for four years now
It seems pretty unlikely that he’s going to suddenly become an awesome running back in the fifth. He couldn’t even get on the field this year when his competition for backup carries was a true freshman who played receiver all camp, a 180 pound true freshman, and, perhaps most embarrassingly, DeAndre Johnson.
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
A week or two ago.
It was kind of odd.
Now he gets to go through two Senior Days, though, so he’s got that going for him.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
Is there any chance that Mulling simply doesn't have his scholarship renewed?
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
Have they ever pulled a scholly
for “not being good enough”? That’s a pretty shitty deal if they have.
Flakbait - January 30, 2012
I have no idea
I wish I’d have thought of it sooner to get it into the On Iowa Pod questions. Seems unlikely, since it’d be outright shitty and bad PR.
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
Probably not like that.
He might see the writing on the wall and transfer, but I doubt they’d outright pull his scholly.
I mean, Zach Furlong was here for 4 years and I think there were at least two years he wasn’t even invited to fall training camp (which is often a pretty good indication that you’re not part of the plans), but they never cut him loose.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
I thought Jason White
was calling it quits (he’s already graduated or will this spring I believe). This makes little to no sense if he was given a scholarship to stick around — the coaches are in effect bribing him with a somewhat precious commodity only to (presumably) not use him very much next year.
HoyaGoon - January 31, 2012
Maybe his skillz on special teams
were too good to pass up
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
The fuck?
Stupid SBN posts my heading twice and not the body at all, which said “were too good to pass up.”
Captain n Diet Coker - January 31, 2012
Don't know for sure
but I think the spots for the guys that never made it open up, thus we’d have room under the 25-limit (and B1G can oversign once every four years I believe, provided they have proper documentation of how that number was reached).
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
The Shaw situation is kind of fucked-up
I feel bad for the kid. I think Hill’s commitment did him in though
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
I agree, see my response a little ways up.
It’s a weird deal and I feel bad for the kid, but we also seem to be only getting one side of the story — and it’s from the aggrieved side that’s now scrambling to find a spot somewhere.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
I saw it
and agree absolutely with your take. But, can Iowa really afford to say “No” to a RB?
Actually, yes. Part of the attrition at the position can be explained, in part, by what seems to be apparent bottleneck. When you’re forced to take 3 or more RBs per year, because they don’t last, it feeds the attrition cycle because a RSFR or the like looks at the depth chart in spring, sees he’s behind 2-3 others and decides to bolt. Which is fine, so long as nothing happens to those in front of him. Which as we well know, AIRBHG will refuse to let happen.
HoyaGoon - January 30, 2012
I wouldn't have minded seeing them grab a JUCO RB to space out the classes a little more.
And, hopefully, avoid some of that bottleneck situation, though. No dice, though.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
So 3 QBs in the class.
Pretty good chance, then, that Imming moves to a new position? Another QB turned WR?
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
Imming is not coming in as a QB
Captain n Diet Coker - January 30, 2012
Imming is a QB in the way that Chad Greenway was a HS QB.
He’s coming as an athlete to play… somewhere.
He’s also a walk-on.
RossWB - January 30, 2012
Ah.
At just 205, he’s probably looking at a move to DB, then?
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012

Like him already. Pretty much took all his snaps under center, has good pocket presence, can throw on the run, has a decent arm, and nice touch. A lot of things/tools that I haven’t seen JVB display…
IAinCA - January 30, 2012
Did his throwing motion look odd?
I felt like the finish to some of the throws looked unusual, but I wasn’t sure.
The Mexican't - January 30, 2012
it's a short-arm (which is good considering he still has power)
but it’s a little low. comes closer to the shoulder than usual than over the top. Could be a problem with linemen, but raising it five to 7 inches doesn’t seem impossible.
he has a strong, accurate, fast-release arm. I like it.

Because KOK does such a masterful job of improving QBs
I keed, I keed.
Though I do wonder how much work on a QB’s mechanics this staff does (as a comparison, Urbs famously did nothing with Tebow’s).
HoyaGoon - January 31, 2012
He kinda does
Kyle McCann improved a lot as a senior. Brad Banks came in as a raw athlete who UCF wanted to move to defensive back to a Heisman runner up at QB. Drew Tate improved in his second year (and then regressed the next year, but that was after getting hurt). Stanzi went from an incredibly inaccurate and mistake prone QB as a sophomore and junior to one of the highest rated passers in the country as a senior. Vandenberg, while he still has flaws, looks dramatically better now than he did when he first got playing time. I have issues with KOK as a OC, but the idea that our QBs never improve is just wrong.
NorseHawk - January 31, 2012

honestly thats the risk you take. commit too early and you may not get the offers you want, but commit too late and you may not get the offers at all.
its going to happen sometimes, its part of being against oversigning in the Big ten
justsomehawkeyefan - January 30, 2012
The way it went down seems kinda crappy
From the way he tells it (and it’s possible that he and his coach are not being completely honest, we’ll probably never know) we’d been telling him for awhile that he had a scholarship, then when he tried to commit we suddenly told him that he didn’t have an offer. Seems like there was a miscommunication somewhere along the line, which is too bad.
NorseHawk - January 30, 2012
I think he probably just waited too long.
As was said earlier, although Iowa said they had 7 to fill with 9 recruits targeted, that does not mean they had 7 RB openings. Of those 7 spots, maybe only 1 of them was available for a RB. It sucks for Shaw, sure, but if he’s got the talent he’ll end up on his feet.
