It's Not Plagiarism If You Link To It Is Back From The Darkness

Windows Error Remix (via oOLuxuX)

A week long vacation was followed by a nightmare of electronic darkness. I'll spare you the gory details and assure you that smart phones are no substitute for a fully working computer. The technology is nice but it's hardly methadone for full blown Internet addict.

I've been somewhat out of the loop and am playing catch up. This post will devaite from the previous format and we'll rejoin regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. For now, it's scatterbrain snippet style. I apologize in advance if some of this news is dated or repetitive. I want to make sure I cover it all some of the news.

We'll start with now former Hawks and their performances in post season all-star events.

Marvin McNutt's performance at Senior Bowl practices may have moved him up on some draft lists. Marvin measured 6'2.5" without cleats and separated himself from the pack despite not flashing coveted speed. Iowa's all-time everything receiver plans to work on his footwork and speed leading up to the combine and draft.

Shaun Prater played in the East-West Shrine game and also helped his draft stock. Prater was a standout on the victorious East defense. Sporting News pegged Prater as one who improved their draft stock the most. SN thinks he might move to a second round pick.

NFL.com released it's mock draft 2012 version 2.0 last weekend. Iowa's Riley Reiff is predicted to the Carolina Panthers as the eighth pick overall. If the Panthers don't take Reiff here, former Hawkeye line coach Joe Philbin and his Dolphins have the next pick. If neither select Reiff either the Bills or Chiefs, at #10 and #11 will.

ESPN's Mel Kiper listed Reiff as his #2 offensive tackle in the draft. Kiper also listed his Top 5's for returning seniors. Micah Hyde is the only Hawkeye listed. Hyde is Kiper's #3 corner.

Moving on, it's the week of National Signing Day (Wednesday). Hopefully Iowa will release their signing day blog like last season (they publish a bio and videos as the signed letters are faxed in). Last night Iowa scored a big verbal commit from Alex Kozan. The Omaha World-Herald is also reporting Iowa landed 8-man footballer Nate Meier from Fremont-Mills, IOWA. There are still offers out there, Iowa might not be done just yet.

Texas defensive tackle Aaron Curry is down to Iowa and Nebraska. He has set his announcement at his High School Wednesday morning (7:00 am).

Iowa received a visit from a high school quarterback that already verbally committed to Ole Miss. CJ Beathard is a three star prospect on Rivals. No word yet on if his visit persuaded him to switch his commitment.

Iowa football now has confirmed four preferred walk-ons for next season. They are Michael Malloy, Alex Imming, Will Kincart and Andre Dawson. Malloy had a scholarship offer but now has to walk-on and earn his scholarship. Dawson has been to Northern Iowa and Iowa Western Community College.

Alex Imming was a second team all-Western Iowa quarterback at Sioux City East. He'll come to Iowa as an "athlete" and stands 6'3" and 205 pounds. Imming, unfortunately, lost his father shortly after committing to Iowa. Here is a touching story from Larry Peterson, of the Creston News.

Will Kincart is from Bloomfield, Iowa. He's a 6'3" 235 pound lineman that projects to either side. He could be Iowa's next long snapper.

Hoops. The Hawkeye men's team left their defense at home last night as they allowed dunk after dunk against Indiana. The Hoosiers made the most of the Hawkeye's matador defense, scoring 100 points in a Big Ten game for the first time since Grunge.

You can watch head coach Fran McCaffery's post-game press conference. McCaffery called it "a very disappointing effort defensively by our guys." Josh Oglesby, who added a career high 24 points, said "our defense was horrible." That it was Josh. That..... It...... Was.

I never knew Ricky Davis was known as "Get Buckets"
it's not "get your own rebounds?"
Would you expect any other name?

Certainly not “get assists” or “gots defense”

No...

But “Get Buckets” sounds suspiciously like a self-appointed nickname.

Again, would you expect any differently from Mr. Ricky Davis?

I have to say that Ricky and the stories about Ricky have made my life better as a Hawk fan over the last 10 years or so. I especially enjoyed the story from the BHGPer that golfed with him (can’t remember off top of my head who that was, but TFJ to that person)

What does TFJ mean?

I see it and never know. The Internet makes me think it’s a sorority thing.

Terrorist fist jab.

Further explanation here

this

funny that TFG is asking about TFJ when everyone can always JFGI

I did google it, but got returns all related to some secret alpha chi omega thing or some such nonsense.
not a problem, i don't care

i just loved the alphabet soup

Iowa beat out Auburn for Kozan right

check this out:

What happened to Gene Chizik’s first two recruiting classes at Auburn?

43 percent of Auburn’s 2009 and 2010 signees are no longer on the team, or never joined the program in the first place.
Attrition: it's not just for Iowa anymore!
At this rate

if KOK gets the Rutgers job, he’ll be in position to go after the Auburn opening in two years.

Aubie won't know what hit 'em.
said Harvey Updike Jr.
Roll Damn Tide.

Did any media seek him out after Alabama won the mnc? I didn’t see anything, and was amazed at the restraint considering how mentally ill that dude is.

Not sure what'd they'd want to ask the man

Media: Hey Harvey, can you confirm that you’re batshit crazy?

Harvey: Yes. Roll Damn Tide.

His case isn’t completely finished yet.

http://www.abc3340.com/story/16549623/judge-delays-decision-in-harvey-updyke-jr-case

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7485140/source-accused-auburn-tree-poisoner-harvey-updyke-turns-plea-offer

Updyke pleaded not guilty on all counts for reasons of mental disease or defect.

But, someone apparently saw him in the French Quarter the night before the 2012 Title Game, and apparently many people (including Clay Travis, who has written a couple of books about SEC football and Tennessee football) want Updyke to write a book.

He may not meet the legal or clinical definition of crazy

but if you’ve seen him in “Roll Tide War Eagle”, he is not a stable man.

Also, this is undoubtedly the first INP to ever link the Creston News or mention the Sauk Valley Predators

Nice to see Bullwinkle is still keeping the hoops dream alive, though.

Fremont-Mills

is in Iowa. They were up 61-0 at halftime of the 8 man championship game in Cedar Falls.

Make that TWO Creston News links

Here’s a story on that game, and on Nate Meier http://www.crestonnewsadvertiser.com/2011/11/18/murray-loses-big-in-8-man-championship/atxn11g/

my bad

nice catch

I met one of the coaches for Fremont-Mills while I was at an in-law event in DSM.

He had just come back from Cedar Falls after that shellacking and couldn’t even properly describe it. He was just as shocked as I was and he actually got to see the game. Just a stupid score for a state championship game.

When did the Herrmann rumor come up?

Hadn’t heard that one yet.

it's the latest, greatest on Twitter and Rivals

Free Scout story on Meier

Karl Klug part two?

the kid is good

I'll repost what I wrote in another thread

He sounds like a good kid and a possible diamond-in-the-rough type, but this makes me a little nervous

Iowa is looking at him as a running back, fullback, linebacker and defensive end.
This could mean he’s versatile, or it could mean that he really doesn’t fit in anywhere (jack of all trades, master of none).

I imagine the reason they're looking at him at RB is because that's where he wants to play.

This is another Derby situation with a lower profile recruit. He’s already a big kid and I’d be surprised if he stays at RB for a full year. If he can carry the weight then I could understand the move to DE, but to me it seems more likely that he moves to LB. Of course, I don’t know shit so I could be completely wrong.

If he knows what's good for him

he’ll make the switch from RB immediately. I’ve got to assume, however, that the coaches envision him a position other than RB, I can’t imagine they like his prospects at RB more than they do Tevin Shaw who wasn’t able to commit due to Iowa apparently being out of scholarships.

When Morehouse tweeted about the commitment I jokingly asked when he'd be moved to LB.

Morehouse’s response was basically, “As soon as he sets foot on campus.” 235 seems very large for a RB, especially considering he’s not even spent any time in a D1 S&C program. After spending a season with Doyle, I’d assume that he could cultivate at least 10-15 pounds of mass. How many D1 programs send out a 250-lb RB?

TO be fair

I think Barkley Hill got the scholarship that would have gone to Tevin Shaw, not that Meier is the RB the coaches took instead of Shaw. I’m quite certain he changes position immediately.

How many people are reporting the Herrmann hire?

I’ve only seen the one.

Does he have any ties to this staff outside of standing across from them during his stint as Michigan’s DC until 2005?

To be fair, that's about as many ties as Soup had to Iowa/KF before he was hired here, too.

I don’t know if Herrman is the guy or not, but if he is it WOULD explain the interminable delay in announcing a new DC.

Fair enough.

Obviously ties to a staff aren’t a requirement for a hiring, and certainly does jibe with the “waiting for an NFL coach” storyline from a couple weeks ago. I’d love to see how his defenses at Michigan performed during his time there. Obviously a national title and Assitant Coach of the Year award aren’t really anything to complain about, but I was barely a CFB fan during his time at Michigan so I know nothing about him.

Ask

And you shall receive That has back to 1999.
Using the info from that link and the highly accurate method of “looking at the total defense ranking” I found the following
2005 – 36
2004 – 33
2003 – 11
2002 – 42
2001 – 12
2000 – 74
1999 – Michigan not listed. IIRC, this was the year Lloyd Carr took a Mike Leach correspondance course and decided Michigan didn’t need no stinkin’ defense!

It's also worth remembering

that after the NC in 97, Michigan was prone to be a team that could be counted on to solidly underperform.

So on the surface, I would not be excited about him being hired.

Sounds like he would fit in perfectly with our coaching staff then!
nice work.

thanks for posting

What about "bend-but-don't-break???"

SCORING defense (I couldn’t find any rankings for 1998/9, so I found the ppg average and guessed a ranking based on the last 5 seasons).
2005 – 45th
2004 – 42nd
2003 – 11th
2002 – 26th
2001 – 9th
2000 – 15th
1999 – 21ppg ~ 22nd
1998 – 18ppg ~ 12th
1997 – 1st (best year statistically of any team in the B1G since 1985)

Quite a bit better looking, IMO.

Tevin Shaw wanted to come to Iowa, was told no schollies left
Whew. Who needs more running backs?
AIRBHG

That’s who.

His hunger is insatiable.
True story time.

Last week I had a dream I was an Iowa runningback. The next day my knee hurt. AIRBHG is a dick.

In related news I will no longer be wearing the awesome #7 jersey I got for Christmas. Don’t want any more Angry Iowa Hating Dieties getting confused.

As if AIRBHG wasn't dirty enough,

now he’s giving RBs cancer and a burnt shell-of-a-home years before we sign them.

Seriously, I’m glad Garmon is apparently healthy, and I wish him the best whether he’s a Hawk or not. But KF and co. do seem to be going out on a bit of a limb with signing him.

When did that happen?
There was an article about him on the

front page of the Register today. Pretty neat read, actually. Kid got cancer when he was 13.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120130/SPORTS/301300031/U-of-I-football-recruit-is-already-a-winner-where-it-counts-includes-recruiting-database-

I knew about Garmon and cancer

was wondering where the info about Tevin Shaw being told there were no more schollies left was coming from. Might shed some light on who the coaches do, and do not, expect to land. Also, as Ross pointed out in the Caring is Creepy article earlier today, Iowa is already over the 85-man limit.

it was on Rivals today
Just read the article

kind of shocking how that all worked out, especially since the kid seems really high on Iowa

It sucks for the kid, but that article also seemed a little weird.

His coach said Iowa had seven openings and was looking at nine guys and was bent out of shape that Iowa told Shaw his offer was no longer good even though they haven’t added seven guys since last week. Even if what he’s saying about the openings and such is true (no idea), it doesn’t follow that those seven spots were first come, first serve, no matter what position a guy played. Iowa may have only wanted to take one more RB and got Hill to flip from ISU in the meantime — hence, no offer left for Shaw.

Also kind of strange that it seems like he was down to Iowa as his only remaining big-time offer.

True

to all of that. I was under the impression, however, that he still had an offer to PSU

Yeah, no idea what offers he really has at this point.

His Rivals profile lists Iowa, Maryland, UMass, Akron, Penn State, South Carolina, Temple, and Towson (aside: that’s a pretty eclectic collection of schools), but the article makes it pretty clear that the UMass, Akron, and Temple offers are no good and gives the impression that the others aren’t either.

I think this story is a good indicator of how unreliable some of the info on recruiting sites can be, especially when it comes to offers. And I don’t blame the Rivals or Scout or ESPN guys for that — they get their info from the recruits themselves or occasionally from their coaches/families, so it can certainly get skewed. Recruits have been known to inflate their interest from schools. (Not saying that this is what Shaw is doing — I really don’t know — just spitballing.) And it makes sense on their end since if other schools think a bigger school is recruiting a kid, it could pique their interest and get them involved with the player. This whole process is just so rife with self-interest and deception.

Caring is not only creepy, it’s really complicated. (And confusing.)

And

that’s why you take the Iowa offer before the last two weeks of recruiting season.

I would certainly love to see another Lohaus in an Iowa uniform.
Only if I can call his kid the Vanilla Gorilla, too.
That was Al Lorenzen, wasn't it?

Brands is Awesome

I had to watch an advertisement for JRob's wrestling camp before I could see the video. Ironic

I love that the clock over Brand’s shoulders is counting up, rather than counting down or showing the actual time. The psychological affect that can play on someone is fun to think about.
But I agree: shoulda woulda coulda. Talking with people coming out of the meet yesterday, we were happy we won, and that we looked much better than last weekend, but it was still kind of a hallow feeling, knowing that there were a few more matches we could have won. But you almost felt guilty feeling that way after last week.

"We're potty trained."

Awesome.

Iowa Ladies Football Academy is only a $500 donation from your wife/SO being feted by Casey McMillan

(and some other Hawks like KF if they’re more into that sort of thing). 95% sure my wife is in for this year. She loved Eyeheart’s recap of last year’s game.

Can anybody get me a link to Eyeheart’s excellent FanPost?. It’s worth the re-read but I can’t find it in the Search function.

I really want to do it

but can’t seem to find someone to do it with me. Last summer my sister said she would do it with me, but has now reneged. I’m just going to have to keep after it.

I registered last Thursday.

My goal is $1500. I’m at $545. Game on.

I really want to do it

But I also promised to visit my preggo sis in NC in June (they’ve lived there a year now & am getting serious guilt) with my kiddos. Not sure I can fit in ILFA & an NC visit between the kiddos finishing school & us leaving for WI for the summer.

This wasn’t supposed to be this complicated!

Lebron Daniel interview

Lebron Daniel

Nice plug for Nico Law in the interview.
Scott Porter: Can you tell us one young Iowa player right now who we should keep an eye on down the road as an NFL prospect?

Lebron Daniel: The first one that comes to my mind is Nico Law who will be a sophomore next year. Yeah, I would no doubt say Nico. He is a guy who played mostly on special teams last year but I think he will see significant time next year and end up starting sooner or later. He did a good job on special teams. The way he flys down the field with his speed. He has great agility and he plays with a lot of heart. It will not surprise me when he becomes a starter and a great player down the line. Watching him as a young guy this year things look promising for him in my opinion.
Wuz good?

THAT’S GOOD.

Love this kid (in a non-creepy way).
I think we can get away with loving him uncreepily

more easily than our male counterparts. Hooray for being chicks!

I think that actually makes it MORE creepy. You're hinting at a sexual attraction.

:)

j/k

ha!

At my age, that interest would best be described as ‘motherly’ much as I’d like to pretend otherwise (regarding my age, that is)

some more senior bowl/shrine post game stuff

senior bowl week in review

McNutt showed a lot of smarts for his position.

McNutt video interview

Shaun Prater Shrine game film breakdown

watched the game.

he didn’t get a lot of throws. Dropped one that coulda went for a touchdown.

The two ISU guys, Johnson and Osemelle definitely didn’t look good. Osemelle looked especially terrible.

That's my fear for McNutt

he still drops more than he should. He’ll make that highlight catch, but it seems like he gets ahead of himself and drops some easy ones.
On the bright side, that should be fixable

The "smarts" thing makes sense since he was a QB...
Sean Draper is also deciding today

Iowa is a finalist

Sean Draper

I like him

Only because his name sounds like Shaun Prater. I know literally zero abou him beside that.

Huh.

I was thinking Don Draper. Maybe he can be persuaded into changing his first name’s spelling to Shon. Or we can call him Sick Whitman.

Ian Thomas will announce Wed. morning
I guess that Draper and Thomas both announce for Iowa and that's it.

No Diamond (no one’s mentioning Iowa anymore), no Curry. No Lambert switch

class is pretty good, not great. 7 out of 10? Okay.

Welcome back, PSD. You were missed.

But where are the Maui links?

heh, luckily I stored all my personal stuff off my harddrive

before the great crash of 2012. When I get them uploaded I’ll post some pics or something. My wife has a great vid of me scaling the side of a lava rock wall with the intent of jumping into the Ocean. I got to the stop and realized two things, 1. There wasn’t a safe place to jump and 2.) going up lava rock without shoes is a lot easier than climbing down.

personal stuff. Gotcha, wink wink.

You climbed the lava wall in bare feet? I couldn’t even walk on the stuff, but then again I’m a puss in bare feet. I think some kinds of grass are far too sharp.

Same here.

Walking on a sidewalk in bare feet is not a happy time, if there are tiny rocks/pebbles on said sidewalk.

I’ve had sensitive feet since grade school.

lol at the pussy foots
Cristobal says no to Rutgers

per Pete Thamel

It sucks to be the Big East when a SUN BELT coach says he'd rather stay where he's at.
FIU getting more love than Rutgers?

Ouch. I wonder if their financial situation is worse than what’s been getting around, bad as that is.

From what I've seen, they were offering him a pretty substantial raise

But he balked at them including a big buyout in the contract. I think he probably has his eye on the Miami job down the road. Rutgers gave Schiano a pretty big raise not that long ago, so I don’t think it’s an issue of them being unwilling to spend money.

sounds like they are hiring OL coach Kyle Flood
Yep.

I’m not sure Cristobal said “no”, as much as pulled his name from consideration before the Flood announcement.

Wait, is Cristobal not some funny shorthand for Crystal Ball? I really thought it was.
He's a really good coach, I think
I'm not sure yet.

He has improved FIU quite a bit. But, if you can get 2nd or 3rd tier Florida recruits, I’d think it would be difficult to not make your program competitive in the Sun Belt.

Hoops stuff:

thanks to Jordan Garretson

Josh Oglesby’s 6 3-pointers against Indiana pushed him to fourth all time in 3s made by an Iowa freshman.
Iowa is the only team in the country with eight players with 120+ field-goal attempts.
Also for Iowa vs. Minn Weds: First 500 UI students receive free black & gold wig. 1st 250 UI students receive pizza, rally towel, BTN shirt
Iowa’s game on Wednesday vs Minnesota is free for students. Also Fran bobbleheads to first 2,000 fans.
Ogles3 should have at least ten games left (9 reg. season games, 1 B1G Tourney game)... how far is he from the record?

That’s a lot of free crap. Hope it gets some students to attend.

he has 30

Kingsbury had 44 in 93-94

Kingsbury also had 117 in 1995
Hmm.

I don’t know how I feel about him potentially breaking a Kingsbury record… Maybe it should be asterisked to indicate that it’s the best non-Kingsbury freshman performance.

Agreed.

It just doesn’t feel right.

What if he starts smoking

and drinking his beer straight from the pitcher?

He'd need to start pissing in random public places to fully win me over.
that sounds like my vacation
Yeah, but you already won me over.
Wait....

Oglesby doesn’t drink straight from the pitcher? THESE BOYS IS SOFT!

I don't think it would count

as Oglesby is shooting from behind the 3 pt line.
Kingsbury was shooting from behind half court

I still remember being at that Long Island U game

where he hit 9 three-pointers. (Had close to 40 points, if you count FTs, I believe)

From his wiki:

Kingsbury played professionally in the CBA, the IBL, and Italy. These days Chris Kingsbury works as Vice President of Investments and Operations at the Bank of Dixon County in Ponca, Nebraska. Kingsbury is now 33 years old and has worked at Bank of Dixon County for 7 years.

Can we talk about that Imming article?

Because I just cried a bucket o’ tears and need to talk it out.

And they’re FD people. Should have known with that last name. It’s just so sad. I’ll be rooting for that kid for sure.

Beathard just committed to Iowa

per Hawkeye Insider

How many more commits are we getting?

We should know how many more scholarships are free and that all have them have been used based on Tevin Shaw getting his offer pulled.

I counted 18 on the HawkeyeReport list, but that doesn't include Beathard or Kozan
Morehouse has 21

including Kozan and Meier, but not Beathard

http://thegazette.com/2012/01/30/colorado-ol-on-board-with-iowa/

so, three left?
Plus the two jucos is 22 total.

How many scholarships do we have to give?

the two JUCO's are already enrolled so don't count against this years numbers
The MasCasa article linked above included them.

So five left?

Morehouse's 21 includes the Jucos

which may be counted against another year. Plus, Staggs got a scholarship for next year. The issue isn’t as much the 25 for this year, it’s the fact that we’re up against the 85-overall limit

That's what I was asking in the first place.
According to Tevin Shaw's coach (so take it with a grain of salt)...

Iowa said they had 7 spots open for 9 guys as of last week. Since then we’ve added Hill, Meier, Kozan, and now Beathard I guess. So that would suggest there are three more spots left. If we filled all those we’d be at 89 scholarship players, according to the Rivals scholarship distribution chart — 85 is the max.

As far as the 25-man limit… not counting the JUCOs*, Iowa has 20 commits so far in this year’s class if we include Kozan and Beathard. So that would be room for 5 more.

  • I know JUCO guys can count on the previous year’s recruiting class, but we signed 25 last year… so how does that work? Does it matter that 4 of those guys have already left/never made it?
So we're already oversigned by one?

…so I guess the real question is who’s leaving?

That is the $64,000 question.

Since I don’t think Iowa moved to the SEC, nor do I think Saban or Nutt took over as head coach here, I have to assume that this oversigning is being done because they know the spots are going to be available soon.

Or

They know some of the recruits won’t qualify.

Also, does the distribution include Reiff and/or the recent transfers?

I don’t have a rivals subscription.

Yeah, the Rivals chart is updated very quickly (it already includes Meier, for instance).

Reiff, Derby, Coker, McCall have all been removed.

No, that's a chance they take

Iowa (and the B1G schools) are barred from signing more than 25 to a single class except in extreme circumstances. Our issue isn’t the 25, but the 85-overall limit. Basically we are 85 minus this year’s seniors plus Reiff, Coker, Marcus Grant

Yeah, I'm aware of how it works.

But let’s say you’re at 64 scholarship players. You can still sign 4 more than you have a scholarships for in case you have some recruits who con’t qualify.

Have to distinguish between

“oversigning”—taking more than the 25 allowed per year—and having too many guys on the roster. Right now, the latter is the issue for us while the former is not yet an issue, but is getting very tight.

True, it's not although really just "oversigning" of a slightly different flavor.

The end result is the same: you have more kids than you really have scholarships to give them.

There's been rumblings of Jaleel Johnson

still having “work to do” to get in

good thing Iowa has it’s get eligible factory in IWCC

Good thing we don't need DL next year, too.

Wait…

Have you seen Jaleel Johnson's film?

No way he would play next year.

I also saw him on Comcast in the state champ game

needs work

There should be a BHGP pick'em for next years starters.
Probably not, but it would be nice to at least have him here as an option...
Get out, Johnny Mullings

Or Mossbrucker, I guess, but it is adorable when he warms up with the QBs so I hope he stays

Alternatively why the heck did we give a scholarship to Jason White?

We gave a scholarship to Jason White that could have gone to Tevin Shaw? #HeadAsplode
maybe they saw Shaw as a defensive back

and feel they are getting Draper

Doesn't matter. Jason White is pretty much the definition of "never going to contribute."
yes, because it's so easy to tell who will contribute when or how in college sports
I think it's pretty clear you don't have much to contribute

When you’re a junior and you’ve pretty clearly been passed on the depth chart by six recuits who got to campus after you. But hey, if he proves me wrong and goes for any significant amount of yardage next season, give him a scholarship then, by all means. I just think it’s pretty silly to give someone who is already on campus and unlikely to contribute in place of bringing better talent into the program.

well, I was just as much saying that you have no idea how the other guy will play out

You seem to be advocating running players off

...Where would Jason White run off to?
Huh?

He didn’t have a scholarship to begin with, how is continuing not to give him one “running him off”?

rupert's just offended that you dare question Ferentz
you're so mature, and you're always right, too. always. how dare someone ask a question that you wouldn't ask?
You're just an apologist douche, Rupert.

Just embrace it. Tyger is always right.

/this is all sarcasm, as you know I tend to agree with you quite often, Rupert.

To be fair to me, I've admitted to being wrong lots of times.

I understand why you wouldn’t see that or remember it though. i don’t go around bragging about how I admitted I was wrong.

I have zero problem with it

maybe he is a locker room leader? maybe he pulls a rudy and works his ass off twice as hard as everyone else. who knows?

We still need him to be the spittin image of a variety of scrambling QBs.

He was once The Denard, you know.

Also, he played in the bowl game.

That was Colin Sleeper
This would be super if we had extra scholarships to give

If we’re going to be brushing up against the limit I would rather spend them on guys who might actually have a chance at being good college football players

He's been here for four years now

It seems pretty unlikely that he’s going to suddenly become an awesome running back in the fifth. He couldn’t even get on the field this year when his competition for backup carries was a true freshman who played receiver all camp, a 180 pound true freshman, and, perhaps most embarrassingly, DeAndre Johnson.

A week or two ago.

It was kind of odd.

Now he gets to go through two Senior Days, though, so he’s got that going for him.

Is there any chance that Mulling simply doesn't have his scholarship renewed?
Have they ever pulled a scholly

for “not being good enough”? That’s a pretty shitty deal if they have.

I have no idea

I wish I’d have thought of it sooner to get it into the On Iowa Pod questions. Seems unlikely, since it’d be outright shitty and bad PR.

Probably not like that.

He might see the writing on the wall and transfer, but I doubt they’d outright pull his scholly.

I mean, Zach Furlong was here for 4 years and I think there were at least two years he wasn’t even invited to fall training camp (which is often a pretty good indication that you’re not part of the plans), but they never cut him loose.

I thought Jason White

was calling it quits (he’s already graduated or will this spring I believe). This makes little to no sense if he was given a scholarship to stick around — the coaches are in effect bribing him with a somewhat precious commodity only to (presumably) not use him very much next year.

Maybe his skillz on special teams

were too good to pass up

The fuck?

Stupid SBN posts my heading twice and not the body at all, which said “were too good to pass up.”

Don't know for sure

but I think the spots for the guys that never made it open up, thus we’d have room under the 25-limit (and B1G can oversign once every four years I believe, provided they have proper documentation of how that number was reached).

The Shaw situation is kind of fucked-up

I feel bad for the kid. I think Hill’s commitment did him in though

I agree, see my response a little ways up.

It’s a weird deal and I feel bad for the kid, but we also seem to be only getting one side of the story — and it’s from the aggrieved side that’s now scrambling to find a spot somewhere.

I saw it

and agree absolutely with your take. But, can Iowa really afford to say “No” to a RB?

Actually, yes. Part of the attrition at the position can be explained, in part, by what seems to be apparent bottleneck. When you’re forced to take 3 or more RBs per year, because they don’t last, it feeds the attrition cycle because a RSFR or the like looks at the depth chart in spring, sees he’s behind 2-3 others and decides to bolt. Which is fine, so long as nothing happens to those in front of him. Which as we well know, AIRBHG will refuse to let happen.

I wouldn't have minded seeing them grab a JUCO RB to space out the classes a little more.

And, hopefully, avoid some of that bottleneck situation, though. No dice, though.

So 3 QBs in the class.

Pretty good chance, then, that Imming moves to a new position? Another QB turned WR?

Imming is not coming in as a QB
Imming is a QB in the way that Chad Greenway was a HS QB.

He’s coming as an athlete to play… somewhere.

He’s also a walk-on.

Ah.

At just 205, he’s probably looking at a move to DB, then?

'Til he gets Doyleized, maybe.
I can't stop thinking of masturbation jokes.
Me neither,

but then again what does that have to do with Iowa sports?

;-)

Do we have a pronunciation yet?

I honestly didn’t even see beat-hard until people started cracking jokes.

It looks French

So I’ll guess at Beh-TARD or Buh-TARD

But your hard beaten guess is as good as mine, really

Actually, it's pronounced BETH-ERD.

He’s the grandson of former San Diego GM, Bobby Beathard.

So the masturbation jokes were totally unfounded.

I'm pronouncing it "beat hard" and he can'
er "can't stop me"

fucking internet, how do you work?

The internet is such a jerk-off
Beathard hands it off to the running back.
Beathard fires downfield for his tight end.
About Beathard

MOAR LBs!!

this kid looks aggressive and appears to like to hit. A little undersized, wonder where he’ll end up? OLB or safety.

I think Nico "I am the" Law already has SS locked up for the next several years.
true

I think that kid(Law) is gonna be a really good one

OTB?

as in the off track betting location?

I kid, I kid

Yeah, with him at safety the defense won't fuck around no more.
He'll have downfield on LOCK DOWN

…get it? Law…lock down…meh, I try

Has anyone else noticed

Our new practice of recuiting intelligent QBs? First we got Rudock, then we went after that UNC recruit with a 36 ACT, and now we pick up Beathard… Whose GPA isn’t on Rivals, but had offers from Duke, Vandy, and UVA.

comes from a football factory too, like Rudock
just watching some highlights on Beathard on youtube

Like him already. Pretty much took all his snaps under center, has good pocket presence, can throw on the run, has a decent arm, and nice touch. A lot of things/tools that I haven’t seen JVB display…

Did his throwing motion look odd?

I felt like the finish to some of the throws looked unusual, but I wasn’t sure.

it's a short-arm (which is good considering he still has power)

but it’s a little low. comes closer to the shoulder than usual than over the top. Could be a problem with linemen, but raising it five to 7 inches doesn’t seem impossible.

he has a strong, accurate, fast-release arm. I like it.

…raising it five to 7 inches doesn’t seem impossible.

TWSS

:)

She was sorely disappointed.

Because KOK does such a masterful job of improving QBs

I keed, I keed.

Though I do wonder how much work on a QB’s mechanics this staff does (as a comparison, Urbs famously did nothing with Tebow’s).

He kinda does

Kyle McCann improved a lot as a senior. Brad Banks came in as a raw athlete who UCF wanted to move to defensive back to a Heisman runner up at QB. Drew Tate improved in his second year (and then regressed the next year, but that was after getting hurt). Stanzi went from an incredibly inaccurate and mistake prone QB as a sophomore and junior to one of the highest rated passers in the country as a senior. Vandenberg, while he still has flaws, looks dramatically better now than he did when he first got playing time. I have issues with KOK as a OC, but the idea that our QBs never improve is just wrong.

The hot rumor of the hour

Terrell Jackson is heading to Iowa

per MSU rivals site.

There were reports he had his Iowa offer pulled but now MSU is full. Could mean Curry is heading to Nebraska. Who knows?

also

sounds like Lambert likes the new coach at Rutgers

So in other words...

It’s definitely KOK? #KOK4Rutgers

I think they promoted the OL coach, Flood.

KOK is still in Iowa City. (Sadly)

Do the Packers have a new OC yet?
Don't know

I thought I heard they were promoting from within, but I’m not sure.

I bet Randall Cobb would be good at the end arounds.

#KOK4GB

How about the Raiders?

/KOK be torturing Ross, no matter what team he follows.

He now says that he's down to Pitt and Illinois, so guess not
BECKMAN'D!

just doesn’t have the same ring to it, sadly.

/pours out a 40 for the departed Zooker

Iowa can oversign by three

per Morehouse on today’s On Iowa Pod

I'm also slightly surprised that PSD buried Taco Charlton in the fanshots.

That’s an all-time name. Signing him is an absolute must. Seriously, Taco Charlton

Good to see Kirk Ferentz is taking the señor loss seriously.
Señor Day*

I’ve been making a ridiculous amount of typos today.

Could he be related...

so whats the deal with this Shaw kid?

did he wait too long to say yes to the Iowa commitment and miss out?

honestly thats the risk you take. commit too early and you may not get the offers you want, but commit too late and you may not get the offers at all.

its going to happen sometimes, its part of being against oversigning in the Big ten

The way it went down seems kinda crappy

From the way he tells it (and it’s possible that he and his coach are not being completely honest, we’ll probably never know) we’d been telling him for awhile that he had a scholarship, then when he tried to commit we suddenly told him that he didn’t have an offer. Seems like there was a miscommunication somewhere along the line, which is too bad.

I think he probably just waited too long.

As was said earlier, although Iowa said they had 7 to fill with 9 recruits targeted, that does not mean they had 7 RB openings. Of those 7 spots, maybe only 1 of them was available for a RB. It sucks for Shaw, sure, but if he’s got the talent he’ll end up on his feet.

conspiracy theory

If he ever had an Iowa offer at all. The services get all their info from the kids/their circle, right?

Sure, but it seems like they could have let him know that so he wouldn't be caught off guard
Pretty sure they did

The weekend he was on his official was the same weekend that Barkley Hill was there. He eve acknowledged Hill in an article after his official visit. Then Hill committed a couple days later. So, yeah.

Coker to Stony Brook

Linky

At first I was like WTF... but it appears they have a pretty good physics program, so it's understandable.
Best of luck to him

Hopefully he does use that time to get his big brain going on a good career path, because I’m not sure the path to the NFL runs through Stony Brook very often.

I'm glad that he's sticking to his academic interests.

That really should have been the priority anyway. It never sounded like he was going to be upset if he missed the NFL. I think he’s got a shot, but if not then I’m sure he’s going to make some solid connections in NY to help fuel his dreams in astrology or physics.

My brother goes there

which means i get to watch Coker still. Win

That'd be like stalking your ex. Creepy and unhealthy.
pft, not so much stalking

i wanted to catch a football game at Stony Brook with my brother next year anyway. watching Coker run over fools will just make it that much better
