When I was a senior in high school, I too had a brief dalliance with Iowa State. About two months before graduation, I was seriously considering going to Ames, when my grandma called and said, simply, "We don't go there." I never again considered ISU, and that August I was in Iowa City.
I'm not saying Barkley Hill got a call from his grandma, but he had someone in his family nudging him toward Iowa City when he announced yesterday he was withdrawing his verbal commitment to Iowa State and committing to the Hawkeyes for next fall. Hill had appeared to be a rock solid Cyclone; he'd committed to Paul Rhodes before his junior season, and maintained that commitment when Iowa offered him a scholarship soon after that. When word of his Iowa City visit came last weekend, it was because his family wanted him to "see all his options", even those that come equipped with an enraged, position-hating deity. Those options were obviously pretty good, because the flip was complete by the end of the day.
Hill was the offensive star of Cedar Falls High's run to the Iowa Class 4A semifinals (2,491 yards, 20 TD), and is arguably the most productive Class 4A back of all time: His 89 career rushing touchdowns are a Class 4A record, and 6,163 career rushing yards puts him near the top for all-time yardage. Hill finished his senior season as Gatorade State Player of the Year and a Parade All-American. Rivals rates him a 3* recruit and the #2 player in the state; Scout and ESPN have him at 2*. He held offers from Iowa and ISU; Michigan State, Minnesota, and Nebraska took a look, but he committed to ISU before they could get to far. His high school coach praised his vision and work ethic, and that's nice, but we just jettisoned a Gentleman of the Year. AIRBHG eats good, wholesome, hardworking kids for breakfast.
Let's not kid ourselves: This decision is about opportunity to play, and with the running back depth chart again decimated, Hill will have every chance to contribute from the moment he steps on campus until the moment he steps off. We're just going to hope the day he steps off is, like, four years from now.

I'm impressed with your Grandma's hate
Even if it for ISU. Props.
CanAzn - January 24, 2012
Hope he survives all 4 years for you guys.
I’d just like to see AIRBHG humbled at this point.
CyHawk - January 24, 2012
Paki O Meara teabagged AIRBHG, yo.
CanAzn - January 24, 2012
He teabagged us all.
mikjones24 - January 24, 2012
Stop.
Paki was a loyal walk-on Hawk who worked his ass off and never complained. He just had the misfortune to not be talented enough to play D1
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Also...
if his twitter feed is any indication he does well with the ladies. Very well.

OhioHawk - January 24, 2012
Yes, and looking at his Twitter avatar I have somewhat of an idea why
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
I would take Paki on any special team Iowa fields right now.
The Bacon Explosion - January 24, 2012
I'm willing to be a paycheck he's FAR more athletic than anyone who ever read this blog.

You might end up owing tyger some money.
SomeJerkPoster - January 24, 2012
and you as well, correct?
Was it you that also played D1?
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Does D-1 water polo count?
HoyaGoon - January 24, 2012
It impresses me more
Water polo water polo is crazy
chitownhawkeye - January 24, 2012
Hmmmm
not sure why water polo got typed twice. I’m losing my mind.
chitownhawkeye - January 24, 2012
I liked it better when that was typed twice.
Kind of like:
“Water polo? (shakes head) Water polo…is…craaaaazy.”
WaterlooChazz - January 24, 2012
yeah that counts
The world needs more sports that involve a small chance of being drowned. Until the competitive waterboarding circuit gets up and running, water polo is the next best thing.
HawkeyeInExile - January 24, 2012
I ran D1 track and cross country. However, my atheticism is questionable.

Or at least the article that said KF blackballed him
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
I was going to say something about

Did Sash also read it a couple times, or did someone just show him the T-shirt idea?

Not really a DannyWoodheadback..
I think he’s more of a BalancedBack
SaturdayMorningKegStanzis - January 24, 2012
I think he's the Iowaback we've been missing since Paki, Wegher, and (especially) A-Rob flew the coop.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
IowaBack indeed
Always need one on the team.

So now we have -
DannyWoodheadBacks
BalancedBacks
IowaBacks
Brad Rogers had a heart problem, so clearly AIRBGH is getting really fucking serious with that position, so is that the CambusBack? What else am I missing?
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
Sorry, “AIRBHG” – I didn’t mean to tempt the deity. I shall walk very carefully for the remainder of the day.
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
I think you're fine so long as you never played RB at Iowa.
“This is not ’Nam… there are rules.”
RossWB - January 24, 2012
Floridabacks
If Rodney Coe makes it back, I think he’ll be a Truckback.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
Wow. If I’m remembering correctly, the FloridaBack has a negative playing expectancy at Iowa (as in, something bad will occur within 6 months of signing the LOI).
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
Actually, Iowa's last full-timer at RB was also a Floridaback -- Damian Sims.
It hasn’t worked out too well since then, though.

I thought he was being a tough guy
As I got older I realized his hidden message was “don’t get caught.”
Blackheartnopants - January 24, 2012 via Android app
Yes, don’t get caught, and, if you do, you’re a dumb ass and will sit in jail overnight.
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
Where are we getting these assumptions that he's spoiled? I never got that vibe, but maybe I missed something.
He fucked up, and he won’t get another chance at college football ever again. I think the disappointment from that would be enough depresssionfuel for me.
hkobb7 - January 24, 2012
He left the team for personal reasons
that some rumored to be “he didn’t want to live in the dorms.”
And, his behavior after Iowa (at OU, and then with the police while at Iowa Western CC) do kind of lend themselves to the idea that Wegher might have been spoiled and pissed away some good chances.
WaterlooChazz - January 24, 2012
Always good to sign the top in state talent
And stick it to ISU just a little bit. Welcome aboard Mr. Hill. I hope you’re stay is long, productive, and AIRBHG free.
On a side note, ESPN says there are 8 4 and 5* recruits “considering” becoming a Hawk at this point. Does anyone have any reasons to believe we pick up any of them?

We're in the last 3 for Kozan with Auburn and Michigan.
He said via a Rivals interview that KF was there last week and the home visit with him was great. We’ll see – he’d be a great addition to the class.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012

Dan Doering

bornofclay - January 24, 2012 via mobile
As 6 seconds guessed, it was indeed Dan Doering in the 2005 class.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
I just took a look back at that class
and now I am sad
6 seconds of hell - January 24, 2012
Although it did produce 5 players who at least got a look from the NFL
That seems like a number I could live with from every class
6 seconds of hell - January 24, 2012
Exactly.
If we pulled that class in every year, I think most people could live with the attrition, not living up to hype, etc. If I have to live through coker, McCall, Derby, etc. leaving every year (or Christensen, bain, whoever), I need me some Moeaki, Richardson, Eubanks, Angerer, Stross, Calloway, GREENE!!!, et al. to make up for it.
Granted, Reiff, McNutt, Bernstine, etc. are no slouches, following up Stanzi, DJK, Ballard, Clayborn, Klug, but they need to have those guys year-in, year-out. if this is what the attrition is going to be like.
tyger1147 - January 24, 2012
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
Stross?

WaterlooChazz - January 25, 2012
Or a single pass

HoyaGoon - January 25, 2012
It was more than one.
RossWB - January 25, 2012
Wasn't he hurt most of that year?
He may not have been as good as projected, by he was a serviceable WR.
The Mexican't - January 25, 2012
I just wanted to make a joke
that makes Stross look like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.
Really, I don’t think he was bad. (Partially because I’ve seen Herb Grigsby – stonehands, and Dominique Douglas – stonehead).
WaterlooChazz - January 25, 2012
Maybe? Probably?
He was overall decent, but he had a really poor game against Ohio State. I was just pointing out that it was more than just one missed catch in that game.
RossWB - January 26, 2012
I honestly didn't remember any drops other than the one in the end zone
which was huge, obviously. But the reaction to some fans after that was disgusting.
HoyaGoon - January 26, 2012
my bad. i just remember him being useful at one time doing some thing
This is why I try not to rely on my “memory” of things.
tyger1147 - January 25, 2012
You remembered right
He had a big catch in the Orange Bowl that kept the clinching drive alive. I think it was a 3rd down, too. It was a nice bounce-back after the numerous drops he had at tOSU (one of them a TD pass).
I also remember him being useful during the horrible IU game in 2007. He caught a late first half TD pass, awesomely spiked the ball – then got his ass chewed by the bench for the ensuing unsportsman-like penalty he received.
Nickhawk08 - January 25, 2012
That class was key in winning an Orange Bowl

HoyaGoon - January 24, 2012
Johnson would be a huge loss this late in the recruiting game
It’d be especially cruel to lose him to a program like Michigan State. I wonder what they’re telling recruits right now and which coach they’re predicting will be let go from the Iowa staff.
Signing day can’t get here fast enough.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012

Great pick up Hawks ! We need one more RB for this class . Tevin Shaw ?
Herky - January 24, 2012
That would be the most likely
Although there is apparently only like 3 scholarships left to give out, but maybe they go over (I think they can go over by 3 so long as the total number of scholarship players is back down to 85 for summer camp or something?).
Captain n Diet Coker - January 24, 2012
yes, that is what oversigning is
you sign more than what you have, but you get kids to transfer/quit before the summer requirements hit.
tyger1147 - January 24, 2012
Correct. And in practical terms, there are no limits such as "3 over 85"
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
well, that was the confusion in the terms for CDC (heh)
They have however many left that would get them either 85 or 25 for this class, whichever comes first. But yeah, the parenthetical clouds that a little. When you’re “cheating” kids out of their college education, there are no rules.

…football, however, is not among those things.
StoopsMyAss - January 24, 2012
there are many factors, etc, etc.
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
"a very good place to learn many things well in preparation for a productive life ahead"
You’re right: animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, agricultural engineering…
Oh, and how to riot.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
"Oh, and how to riot"
I never acquired that skill in my time in Iowa City. I did, however, learn how to survive a tornado. Important skill, that.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Me too!
Fucking tornado of 2006. I never want to be that close to a tornado ever again.
We lacked an event like VEISHA that was necessary for the proper acquisition of high-level rioting skills.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
I saw a car flipped on its roof on Church St. once, it was blue.
That’s the second closest thing to a riot I’ve ever seen in Iowa City. The closest was after the 2005 Michigan game. Nothing got out of hand, but there was a lot bottled up rage after that game, and a lot of glass bottle smashing heard on my walk home.
Give Eddie a Beer - January 24, 2012
I think I saw that car the next day when we went out gawking at the destruction.
I think I had a rage blackout after the ‘05 Michigan game. I got home, but I have no recollection of doing so. At least I didn’t wake up with blood all over my hands…
(To be fair, it probably would have been the blood of Dave Witovet. AND NO JURY OUTSIDE OF ANN ARBOR WOULD HAVE CONVICTED ME OF WRONGDOING.)
RossWB - January 24, 2012
The car I'm talking about
was flipped over on some random weekday. It was not the result of the tornados. I’m pretty sure it just made someone mad. But I’m sure there were also blue cars flipped over by the tornados of ’06. Blue cars are just not safe.
Give Eddie a Beer - January 24, 2012
A friend owned a blue car
it got trashed by a mob after a party. It just happened to be parked outside the wrong door. He now over insures everything.
Flakbait - January 24, 2012
Ohhh
Yeah, I meant a tornado-flipped car. It was by the Starbucks on the corner, I think.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
Truth
You would’ve been fine for that hypothetical crime. What a disaster of a game for that crew.
A happy rager was after the Wisconsin game in 2004. That was a good one. And I have to think Iowa City would’ve gone bonkers had the 2002 Minnesota game been played in Iowa City.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Yep
The post-game celebrations in 2002 for the Minnesota game would have been extraordinary if the game had been in IC. (But then we never would have gotten to tear down the Metrodome goalposts…)
RossWB - January 24, 2012
True - that's an especially awesome mini-riot
Tearing down the goalposts in an opponent’s stadium – doesn’t get much better.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
and then getting them out of the house
OhioHawk - January 24, 2012
After the Wisco loss in 1998
The Ped Mall came damn close to a riot.
Flakbait - January 24, 2012
It was mostly Wisconsin fans being assholes, right?
Not that “Wisconsin fans being assholes” is a major surprise – they take peculiar glee in being assholes – but didn’t Wisconsin fans go bananas after that game? I’ve heard the Ped Mall was completely trashed.
That was probably their first win in Iowa City in a quarter-century.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Didn't Ron Dayne set the NCAA record for career rushing yards in that game?
Or was that up in Madison the next year?
RossWB - January 24, 2012
It was in Madison in '99
Sad face…
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Ah.
I knew it was against Iowa…
RossWB - January 24, 2012
He went for like 240 or 250 in the game too
He ran over everything in sight.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
That's how it started
but Iowa fans were in no mood for their shit. ICPD deployed EVERYBODY and got it under control but it was not a good night downtown.
Flakbait - January 24, 2012
I'm interested in hearing more about that night.
I remember being at the game with my parents and Wisconsin just dump-trucking us. Thankfully I wasn’t in college yet and left Iowa City after the game. I can only imagine the fights in downtown. Wisconsinites going ape, breaking stuff, starting shit, etc., and the Iowa hoardes not putting up with it.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
fights (mostly shoving/posturing) started at the game
Wisco fans entered the student section en masse and it got very heated.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
I remember that as well
My dad’s seats are in the north end zone so the old student section was only a couple sections away. You could see it getting heated over there late in the game when Wisconsin was in curb-stomp mode.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Ummm, try first win over IOWA, anywhere, under Fry.
I can remember when Camp Randall was Kinnick North….
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
They beat us at Camp Randall in 1997 when Scott Mullen started at QB
That was their first win in the series since 1976. The 1998 game was their first win in Iowa City since 1974.
There was a time in my life when I had no idea what it was like for Iowa to lose to either Wisconsin or Iowa State.
Nickhawk08 - January 25, 2012
Ok. I stand corrected.
I remember that time. It was called “birth to 19”….
I also remember this line “The only reason you’re going to the Rose Bowl is because you didn’t play Iowa this year” That went over real well in the Madison suburbs in 90-whatever it was that they went to their first one.
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
I lived in Burge my freshmen year
that was a riot. So much so my next of school was at another college.
silkhawk - January 24, 2012 via Android app
Me too
I ended up taking two years off before going back, and I lived off-campus for the rest of my time there. Coincidence?
Brock Sampson - January 24, 2012
I was going to mention something about Burge being a riot every weekend night
Thursday Night: Fire Alarm
Friday Night: Fire Alarm
Saturday Night: Fire Alarm
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Burge was a complete fucking mad house
before the drinking age changed to 21. A couple fire alarms are nothing.
Flakbait - January 24, 2012
I turned 19
2 months before they changed the drinking age to 21. I was a popular man.
silkhawk - January 24, 2012
I can only imagine living in Burge
I lived over in Rienow and we had the occasional fire alarm at 3 am on a Friday night in the middle of winter. Those were never fun.
Is Burge where they had kids stay for orientation? I remember staying at a dorm over there for orientation, but I can’t remember if it was Burge. Either way, the dude I shared a room with was arrested that night and gave ICPD a fake ID. Good start to his Iowa career.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
It sounds like you may have been my brother's orientation roommate
If so, very small world. Did you start at UI in 2000?
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
No, my freshman year was 2002
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Gotcha
It might be a pretty common story then in Iowa City. God I love that town.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Yep
There were a few guys from my orientation that were arrested during orientation (and I did start at UI in 2000, so your brother may have been one).
Captain n Diet Coker - January 24, 2012
Were you one of the girls
that fell prey to the seasoned veteran males at Brother’s and their smooth talking? Also a pretty common orientation story, I think.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Not during orientation
Once school started…yes.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 24, 2012
Ooh, maybe we are the ones with the small world
OK, that was too creepy even for Caring Is Creepy. I’ll show myself out.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Hey, I also started in 2000.
I did not get arrested during orientation, though.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
There were a few that got arrested during my orientation
Must be common. I miss Iowa City so much.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
The lesson, as always – pick your going out companions with purpose. I ran on more than a handful of occasions, and was never the slowest
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
There was a high school kid in one of the Hamsterdam posts asking about colleges
I think it was the Tebow post. He needs to get over here and read this before he makes his choice.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
Was it iamalex?
Sounded like his priorities were running more towards academics…
HawkeyeGirleye - January 24, 2012
With each passing year,
I subscribe more to the Bill Simmons theory on college selection:
Follow the warm weather and hot ladies.
WaterlooChazz - January 24, 2012
We can't all go to Swarthmore.
SomeJerkPoster - January 24, 2012
I think that theory is mostly solid
But Iowa City has more than its fair share of hotties, as do several other “cold weather” colleges.
And there’s not much better than the first nice day in the spring when skirts re-appear. That is a sight to behold.
Nickhawk08 - January 25, 2012
My dorm neighbors in Burge got arrested for building pipe-bombs.
sniffMemories…
RossWB - January 24, 2012
My neighbors

silkhawk - January 24, 2012 via Android app
I lived in temp housing my entire first semester
I got my room because the guy previously there got kicked out for having 4 POUNDS of marijuana in his closet. I think some things remain the same every decade.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
In 90 or 91
some guy about killed himself building a pipe bomb in Burge. He ended up setting his room on fire and jumping out a third story window to escape. Broke both legs, damn near died. I remember watching the ambulance cart him off.
Flakbait - January 24, 2012
Wait, what?
I was in the dorms for 2 yrs (Daum (because i’m am idiot) & Currier) starting fall ’89 & I have no memory of this. Had plenty of friends over in Mayflower, too. Weird.
HawkeyeGirleye - January 24, 2012
I was in Currier
ground floor north both years. Worked in the cafeteria the second year.
The incident didn’t get much press. I don’t think the U really wanted it to.
Flakbait - January 25, 2012
God, my memory is terrible
Um, pretty sure I was south (was that the ‘girl’ side? Seems like all the boys were on the other side of the floor) & maybe 2nd fl? Sheesh, it was only 20 years ago, right?
I quite enjoyed the Currier cafeteria- hated wandering over to Burge on the weekends. Ya did good work, Flak!
As far as the incident? Just surprised the rumor mill wasn’t a little stronger for something big like that.
HawkeyeGirleye - January 25, 2012
Shit, yeah. I remember that.
I was on campus finally after some time at Kirkwood. I was that lame upperclassman who wanted to get the dorm experience (and to put off paying rent), though I was over in Rienow.
Eyeheartfreedumb - January 24, 2012
That sounds about right.
RossWB - January 24, 2012
And not just Burge
I lived in Mayflower and that was a nightly occurence. I slept (read: I was totally passed out) through a few of those after I had gotten to used to them. Good thing they were never a real fire alarm.

Torbee - January 24, 2012
There was a major flood the summer I left (2008) and we did lose the '02 Orange Bowl while I was there.
Nothing happened that compared to the Gang Lu shootings or Chris Street’s death, though. (And I’m perfectly OK with that.)
RossWB - January 24, 2012
And we saw the basketball program go into complete free-fall on and off the court

PIERRE PIERCE
The sky is always falling, unfortunately. It’s the rule of the world. Thank a deity we don’t have many more of the Gang Lu or Chris Street stuff, as you mention
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
Shit, I forgot about Easy Place!
I got a Ben Harper poster there.
Wasn’t the Dome burning the same year as 9/11 too? All sorts of shit went down that year (that stuff, plus me personally).
And, oh, Pierre Pierce. And douchebag Alford. I’ve got stories of the basketball team coming in to the restaurant I worked at and having to serve them. And Nate Kaeding impersonating Pierre Pierce is one of them.
Captain n Diet Coker - January 24, 2012
Um, you, personally, went down that year? Is that really what you meant to say?
txhawkeye - January 24, 2012
The Dome burned in 2001. George Harrison passed away that fall too
The basketball team hit their high water mark under Alford at No. 2 Missouri, then promptly shit the bed the rest of the year.
Do share stories on basketball around that time. They’re always fun.

My apartment was 2 blocks away from Chi Omega, so we heard the fucker, but holy shit, we escaped with zero damage. I consider myself lucky as hell.
EnergizerHawk - January 24, 2012
I learned how to riot at the last wet VEISHA (bystander)
And met President Jishke, while a aquaintance via an ISU (highschool) friend (we were all hammered) was being arrested for public intox after rolling one of those giant trash barrels down (what seemed like) the longest hill on campus while screaming at the top of his lungs.
All of this happened on our way to see Kevin Nealon and (/blecsh) The Nadas (if you know who I mean… we left). We stayed drunk, and were better off for it.
Eyeheartfreedumb - January 24, 2012
Jischke. Former President of ISU. See also OMHR.

Captain n Diet Coker - January 25, 2012

Nickhawk08 - January 26, 2012
Didn't Riverfest used to be really VEISHA-esque?
And then it was tamed waaay down and only now making it back to decent even status?
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
Beats me.
I never thought Iowa City needed a VEISHA-type event because almost every weekend ended up being a big party downtown.
RossWB - January 25, 2012
That was my senior year of HS.
My parents live quite close to Mercy Hospital—about 3 blocks away from Iowa Ave—the worst part of the destruction. Of course I was standing outside when it came through, marveling at how quiet it was. Then a transformer blew right outside our house. It was NOT quiet anymore.
One Night Stanzi - January 24, 2012
Yeah, I was living pretty near Mercy then too.
We were in an apartment on the corner of Governor and Iowa (or maybe the next street over from Iowa; my memory is hazy now). It decimated an entire block of houses across the street from us and did a number on the sorority up the hill from us.

WaterlooChazz - January 24, 2012
I was living in the Blackhawk apartments on Court St
directly across the street from the old brick church that collapsed (St. Patrick’s). Shit went down. But it was the best night I’ve ever had in Iowa City. Such camaraderie and open container allowance may never again be seen in Iowa City.
therealCatnuts - January 24, 2012
That night was wild
Open containers were everywhere, and the cops didn’t care. I think the Hy-Vee south on Gilbert had power and their liquor store was completely cleared out.
Nickhawk08 - January 24, 2012
I think everyone, cops included, was just overjoyed that downtown Iowa City wasn't obliterated by that tornado.

B2B Sales
That’s where the easy money is. (Mine is commercial insurance sales, BTW). Better money is starting your own company, but that’s also harder. Both are stressful as a mofo, so you’d also better have Delaney-level confidence (I do. It’s also one of my annoying traits at times)
If you’re interested in sales, every company LOVES former D1 athletes. It’s a signpost about work ethic and sacrifice, and also a decent way in the door, the hardest part of every sales job worth a damn. The other way is nice boobs and a pretty face, but I’m guessing neither of us has that going for us.
therealCatnuts - January 25, 2012
I'm good at sales.
Really good. When I’ve done it, I learn the product inside and out and have a personality that just creams “honest!” to people. Something I learned from waiting tables: girls can get by with a pretty face and a little flirting. I can get by with great knowledge and a connection. Or something like that. Just never had a want for it. Now I sort of do. Get me a product I actually like that, and I’m sold. hardeeharhar
tyger1147 - January 25, 2012

There are enough lawyers around here
that eventually we’ll start whipping out LSAT comparisions
HoyaGoon - January 25, 2012
I won't do that. I didn't study or try for that so I don't want to compare.
Embarrassing.
tyger1147 - January 25, 2012
GRE 750/770 6.0 here
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
I knew we had some intelligent and interesting commenters here
but damn there’s some fine scores being discussed.
therealCatnuts - January 25, 2012
700/780 5
Me write pretty one day, PackerHawk.
SomeJerkPoster - January 26, 2012
To be fair
That score was only on my last test. I took it 4 times over 3 years as I applied for different programs, etc. I had a 5 and two 5.5s before that. I think the 5 was graded by a history buff because I made an argument that Truman deserves more credit than Roosevelt since he actually decided to drop the bombs. It was stupid but well written and argued. I regretted it as soon as I left the testing center though.
PackerHawk - January 26, 2012
i had two hs buddies with 5 800's on their SAT's
one went to brown on a full ride and was a lawyer in four years
the other went to Yale on tennis scholarship
both were helacious bridge players

HoyaGoon - January 25, 2012
faint praise is better
than just damning
Lycurgus - January 25, 2012
What are "5 800's"? I must be out of the loop.
One of my friends from elementary got a 36 on his ACT. Went to Princeton. Helped develop Wordnet 2.0. He knew a girl from Acadeca: as a freshman in high school, she got a 1600 on her SAT. To see if it was a fluke (according to him), she took it again as a sophomore. Got a 1600 again.
tyger1147 - January 25, 2012
I feel so inadequate now.
It felt pretty good just reaching the 30 plateau.
isHawkeye - January 25, 2012
Don't feel bad
I got a 27. Which was pretty good for a stoner about two years after HS graduation who hadn’t read anything more challenging than the TV guide.
Flakbait - January 25, 2012
27 represent.
not showing off.. not falling behind
SaturdayMorningKegStanzis - January 25, 2012
I had a 25
in 8th grade. Sorry, I had to. Had a 1050 on the SAT in 7th grade. That wasn’t as impressive though.
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
Now we're talking!
I’ve found my people.
HawkeyeGirleye - January 25, 2012
I remember when I got a 27 or 28, one or the other, people I knew at the time were surprised, because it was higher than they expected. Fucking so-called friends.
txhawkeye - January 26, 2012
I am the family underachiever
They were happy with the score but, as any standardized testing always would, it led to more ‘if only you’d just apply yourself more’.
HawkeyeGirleye - January 26, 2012
I was the opposite
Standardized testing always led to a look at the report card. But if you can coast to As and Bs why strive for a 4.0?
PackerHawk - January 26, 2012
Oh, never mind. I see we have the same issue.
D’oh!
PackerHawk - January 26, 2012
28 here
Although I read really slowly and only finished the math test. I got a 35 on that one. Higher math score than my brother who got a 34 overall. I never really liked the amount of time given. I always felt I should have scored a lot higher, but because I read more slowly I never got a chance to finish.
StewMonkey13 - January 26, 2012
I've always been a very fast reader with strong comprehension.
Perhaps unfairly, it absolutely helped me it standardized testing. I wonder if you could have used your reading speed issues to get more time to complete the test. I know a few people who were able to do that.
HawkeyeGirleye - January 26, 2012
I think I'm the outlier.
There’s a strong correlation between reading speed and reading comprehension. My comprehension is quite good, just not my speed. So for almost everyone who reads as slow as I do the extra time wouldn’t necessary mean higher scores, but for me, it almost certainly would have. I only got about 2/3 of the way through the English/Reading/Science tests and got about a 26 on each of them. I think if I’d been able to finish them I could have scored well over a 30 overall.
StewMonkey13 - January 26, 2012
How this?
My average score was 31. My English section was 19. (I blame that on being deaf and not knowing how to speak until I was 6)
Wish I had gone to Iowa instead if ISU. Stupid Materials Engineering. Had I known I was going to end up with a degree in Chemistry instead, I would have done Iowa in a heart beat.
RH's Bookie - January 25, 2012 via mobile
I had a similar problem.
36s on the math and science, but only a 33 overall.
CyHawk - January 26, 2012
And now you're a writer!
“only” a 33 overall? That is a damn fine score.
therealCatnuts - January 26, 2012
Nah, I'm a metallurgist
Hack Blogger is just something I do for fun
CyHawk - January 27, 2012
Yeah
but few schools outside the Midwest will accept the ACTs. At the time, I remember that all the schools out East (and Stanford) that I applied to wouldn’t accept my ACT scores
HoyaGoon - January 25, 2012
Yeah, that’s changed. My oldest now in sophomore in college – schools aren’t as fixated on SAT or nothing anymore.
txhawkeye - January 25, 2012
That was becoming true as far back as 96
at least at the Ivies. I hadn’t intended to take the SAT I at all, but it was a prerequisite for a scholarship. Back then it was ACT or SAT, or ACT + SAT subject tests. (I applied to 4 ivies and UChicago).
nhradar - January 25, 2012
Yes, this.
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012
Then it was a quick change
because I graduated H.S. in 1995 and I remember schools like Georgetown, Harvard and Duke not accepting ACT scores (or at least preferring SATs).
HoyaGoon - January 25, 2012
I only applied to Princeton outside of the midwest
And the class of 96 was preferred SAT but you could still get in with the right resume and GPA.
PackerHawk - January 25, 2012

More Caring is Creepy
From HR – Iowa just offered Robert Caldwell, a JUCO DE that was teammates with the other JUCO we were recruiting in December. Apparently Iowa’s in the lead. He’d be a good get and would help immediately to plug the hole that is DE on next year’s team.
