FIRST LOOK: Iowa Hoops Throwback Jerseys For Feb. 4 Penn State Game

Did you know the Iowa basketball team was honoring the 1986-1987 team that won 30 games and made the Elite Eight at the Penn State game on February 4th? It's okay if you didn't know -- it had been mentioned in passing a few times, but no one's really made a big deal about it yet. But Dr. Tom Davis and several other members of that team will be in CHA on that day and there are other festivities planned as well. But probably the most notable aspect of the celebration is this -- Iowa will be wearing throwback jerseys for that game.

And now, courtesy of Josh Oglesby, we have our first glimpse of what the throwbacks will look like:

What do you think? I'm not a big yellow jersey guy... but even I think these look pretty damn sharp.

Those look fantastic

Big fan.

I'm not a jersey buyer (outside of Hockey)

but these are fucking sweeet

The more I like at it...

Does the number on the jersey seem small? Like really small?

yes, very small.

Hopefully Hightower isn’t reffing, his eyesight isn’t very good and he’ll have a hard time getting the numbers correct.

It's Lick Jr's throwback
Front of jersey numbers are typically a lot smaller. Don't know if they're THAT small, but yeah.
Awesome unis

Also, fuck UNLV. God dammit. That fucking game still pisses me off. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

you just ruined my morning

bringing up that game.

Nice.

Those mid-80s unis are some of my favorites.

Oglesby doing his best "confidential informant" silhouette.
Those are fantasmagizing.
Fucking awesome.

We could just keep wearing those on a permenent basis as far as I’m concerned.

Bring back the black and gold Nike Dunks also!

I was just looking for those.

Greatest shoes ever.

Yessir

You can make your own here: www.nikeid.com

I’m a sneakerhead myself

Still have my pair of those

Maybe Nike will supply those as well for the game.

Short shorts too?

My kids and even myself laugh looking at some of the old footage. It’s. Wonder some guy’s dong didn’t ever peek out back in the day.

I think they had sac holders or something.
Even so....
It happened more than once

I remember a front sports page picture of Dennis Rodman going up high for a rebound (sometime during the Pistons two title runs in ‘89-’90) where you could see a little something sticking out of the bottom of his shorts. The floor photographers behind the basket had a bad angle for that sort of thing.

Suh-weet

So, will Scheels be selling these for an arm and a leg?

I have not heard yet.

BUT Iowa is not one to fail to embrace money-making ventures… so I would be surprised if they didn’t make replicas of these for sale.

Will they also

have the shadow outline of a human head on there, too?

Because that’d be pretty cool.

Or CREEPY.

Although I was wondering the other night during the Iowa-Purdue game what Iowa’s jerseys would look like if they got the full Nike treatment with those fancy design plates on the back (like Purdue, Ohio State, Duke, North Carolina and several other teams have). I imagine they would work a lot of corn into the design.

I imagine it thusly.

tag: script iowa motherfuckers FTW
The color is gold...like in your momma's grill. :^)
I’m not a big yellow jersey guy…
I love the uniforms that Iowa usually wears

but these make those look like a waste of space.

Fantastic in every way. That should be our regular home jersey. In white too.

Now they just need to change the lanes back to yellow from black. And lose the parquet already.

If this isnt a winner

then we don’t have one
i vote for making it standard issue

Great. This was just "a jersey" when I was at Iowa....

so, basically, I’m a throwback.

That '86-87 team was simply incredible.

It had everything, with big bulky guys and little guys and athletic guys and dead-eye guys from about 15-20 on jumpers and everything. Me and some buddies watched the Final 16 game from the old College Street Club against Oklahoma, and OT game I recall, which BJ tied in regulation with a super long shot that made the place go berserk. Then in the Final 8 game we were up almost 20 at half to UNLV…..and somehow blew the lead, and the game. Really, heartbreakingly painful. And that was that—we have never been nearly as good again.

The great thing was that team was even BETTER than it was, so to speak. Gerry Wright had been hurt much of the season, I recall, and if he’d been healthy all year, you have maybe the best Iowa team ever, better maybe even than the 1969-70 team. I recall that BJ wasn’t the projected starter until the slated guard got hurt, and BJ just took over and never looked back. You had Gamble, who was money inside 20 feet, and Horton, and Marble, and Wright, and so on. For that one season, we had elite talent six-deep.

And, of course, there was the legendary fight between the BB team and wrestlers….

It’s been a long time, so maybe my dates are off on some of the above, but I remember all that stuff happening in ’86-87. What a year!

Although - one, Ronnie Lester, would like a word with you

God dammit. Now I’m upset all over again.

Lester was the best most valuabe Iowa BB player we've ever had....

….arguably better or at least more valuable than even guys like John Johnson and Freddie Brown, but that ‘79-80 team wasn’t as good as the ’86-87 team—it just peaked in the tourney and got to the Final Four. Other than Lester and Vince Brookins, that ’80 Final Four team was just average at the other positions.

But that 87 Final Eight team was loaded top to bottom.

Truth be told, I’d pick the ’69-70 Iowa team to beat any of them, if pressed.

I live in Vegas

and run into Jerry Tarkanian from time to time. It takes every fiber of my being to not sweep his leg when I see him.

Gerald Paddio works out at the same gym that I do and I once brought up that game. He stated that Tark told the Rebels at halftime to pretty much go out and play street ball. No set plays — just ball. It worked.

I still can’t believe Iowa scored 58 points in the 1st half.

I haven't heard the tale of the hoops/wrestling fight.

Please feel free to tell the tale or, if there is one, provide a link?

Yeah, I adored that team as a young man.

They were special.

Did anyone notice that Michigan was wearing the high socks with stripes?

I wonder if that look is coming back. Kind of amusing.

I dig these

with a shovel. I love Iowa throwbacks. Salty.

This pains me but...

in terms of being an Iowa basketball fan, I have never been the same since the ‘86-’87 season. We had the convergence of Raveling’s recruiting ability and Dr. Tom’s coaching. Even then, it looked like the best opportunity we might have in a long time to win it all. Unfortumately, appearances were correct.. No one team or one loss has stuck with me as long and painfully as blowing the lead on UNLV. It was a great team.

One more thing, and I assume that people are glossing over this because the old script unis are the best. The only problem is that they AREN"T Dr. Tom’s unis for the 86-7 season. I did a double-take when I saw this, then clicked over to You Tube for the final seconds of the Sweet Sixteen game against Oklahoma, and verified it. Lute used them, Raveling used them, but Dr. Tom changed the unis. As much as I love them, use them some other game than this one. Give that team their uniforms.

It's true

They are wearing white home uniforms with IOWA in capital block letters. I will post what seems to be the lone dissenting view. I never liked the Old Gold home unis, and still don’t . Give me home whites any day.

Just posted to the Twitters

Very nice

Gatens has Samoan calves, not sure if I’ve ever noticed that before. I have calf envy right now.

Are you going to be like the guy from an old True Life: I Had Plastic Surgery

and get calf implants?

I would not be that guy

But I will say that I did understand.
