Caring Is Creep 2012: Have A Seat, Cody Sokol

A.J. Derby's in-season move to linebacker brought excitement over the prospect of him getting on the field sooner, but it also had a worrying downside: it significantly depleted Iowa's quarterback depth, especially come 2013 when current true freshman Jake Rudock was slated to be the only quarterback on the roster. As a result, landing at least one quarterback in the current recruiting class seemed like a virtual necessity. So it's good news -- something that has been in scant supply where Iowa football is concerned lately -- that Iowa has indeed added a quarterback to the 2012 recruiting class. Cody Sokol, a JUCO QB out of Scottsdale Community College, announced his decision to attend Iowa via Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

Sokol chose Iowa over offers from Arizona, Cincinnati, Maryland, and a handful of mid-major programs. His final decision was a difficult one between the in-state Wildcats and Iowa and, ultimately, Sokol may be the second quarterback recruit Iowa has landed in recent years because of a coaching change that involved Rich Rodriguez. Four years ago, Iowa was able to land John Wienke after Rodriguez was hired at Michigan and Wienke decided his skills were unlikely to mesh well with Rodriguez's preferred offense. (Given the struggles endured by Nick Sheridan and Steven Threet in the early days of the RichRod Era at Michigan, he was probably right.) Of course, now RichRod is staking his claim to the southwest at Arizona and, once again, his offense is a turn-off for a recruit who's looking for a chance to play in a pro-style offense.

Sokol is a 3* recruit at Rivals and 247Sports and a 2* recruit at Scout (ESPN hasn't graded him yet) and has solid QB measurements (6-3, 210). He was a second-team JUCO All-American this year, thanks to a phenomenally productive season: 253/424, 3807 yards, 43/10 TD/INT. He seems to be elusive in the pocket as well, if Rob Howe's comparison of him to Drew Tate is accurate. As far as quarterbacking skills go, highlight films don't give a full picture, but he seems to have a good arm and the ability to drop some pretty passes into his receivers' hands. In addition to the highlights up top there are several more on YouTube; just search for "Cody Sokol."

Star-divide

While it's been a while since Iowa has dipped into the JUCO ranks to find a quarterback prospect, it's certainly not unheard of in the Ferentz Era. Iowa's last JUCO quarterback was Nathan Chandler, a behemoth of a quarterback with an occasionally erratic arm who guided Iowa to ten wins primarily by staying out of the way and letting Robert Gallery, Fred, Russell, and a fearsome defense do their thing. Chandler's predecessor at Iowa was also a JUCO quarterback -- Brad Banks. Perhaps you've heard of him? Banks had such a brilliant year in his one season as starter that he finished 2nd in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the AP National Player of the Year Award. Adding a JUCO quarterback is also a smart way to address the experience issue that was also a concern with the quarterback position. If Iowa had landed a true freshman quarterback prospect this year they would have been faced with the possibility of a 2013 depth chart that contained a redshirt sophomore (Rudock) and a redshirt freshman (Hypothetical Quarterback X); adding a JUCO prospect mitigates that experience concern to an extent.

The other big question is: when will Sokol play? James Vandenberg's unimpressive play down the stretch in the 2011 Iowa season (particularly the final two games of the season) might have opened the door a crack for someone else to get a crack at the starting quarterback spot. (Considering Wienke has more interceptions than completions at Iowa, it's probably not going to be him.) Conversely, Sokol could also redshirt in 2012, compete with Rudock for the starting job in 2013, and still have two years of eligibility to play for Iowa. Sokol himself says both options are on the table:

"I know the coaching staff wants competition so I’m just going to go in and compete and do my best," Sokol said. "I might redshirt so I can learn the offense and just develop with the system, but you never know what’s going to happen."

My guess is that unless he proves to be absolutely sensational at the spring or summer practices, he'll be using that redshirt in 2012. Whether he plays or not, though, he's definitely a welcome addition to this recruiting class and a means of addressing the lingering issue of quarterback depth. And if he can legitimately challenge Vandenberg and either win the job or push JVB to improve to another level, so much the better. Welcome aboard, Mr. Sokol.

Dude looks like a certified badass in his Rivals photo.
He'll be here for the Spring game

looking forward to seeing what he can do

looks solid

at this point, il try anyone out. in my mind Vandy is a backup, not a starter.

I'd like to see how he does under center

Can’t really get a sense of his skills throwing on the move. We’ve already got a starter that only looks comfortable(at home) from the gun and that hasn’t worked out too well for us.

If the kid gets the chance to compete for the job or as Ross mentioned, pushes JVB to improve I’m all for it.

Welcome to Iowa son!

yeah, I only watched about half of the above video

but I believe i saw 16 plays, 14 of them were from the gun. the other two were short yardage roll-outs for TD’s.

We just might end up with a couple of excellent arms from the ’gun, but never use them untill Iowa is in a big hole late in the game… great.

wrongheaded thinking about QB position

The best QB on the Hawkeye roster got moved to LB. Look not only at the dynamism being exhibited at the QB position around the country, but also at the most exciting Iowa QBs in the KF era. Around the country it’s the QBs who can beat you with their feet who are winning games for their teams. In the KF era, the two most dynamic QBs we’ve seen were Brad Banks and Drew Tate, guys who could also beat you with their feet. And that’s exactly the kind of QB we had in A.J. Derby. So what does KF do with him? Move him to LB.

Huh?

Derby is a little bit out of the Cam Newton mold in that he has significant size (though not quite as big as Newton), making him even more dangerous as a QB when he takes off on foot. Moreover, the Iowa offense is better suited for this kind of QB than the spread and other versions of the option, precisely because it is NOT designed for QB runs. This is a crucial distinction between the pro set and offenses that feature plays with designed QB runs. You can defend a designed QB run. You can’t defend improvisation. That’s why Banks and Tate were so dangerous.

Big mistake, Kirk. Move Derby back to QB and recruit more LBs. Get busy. Do it NOW.

Cam Newton has shown an ability to pass the ball.

I never saw that from Derby. Every time I saw Derby throw the ball it looked average-to-terrible. If Derby had shown any ability as a QB proper, I’d imagine he’d have been given a shot. Instead he realized he’s not a D1 QB and has embraced the move.

I've never understood the love for Derby at QB.

I watched the state championship game he played in, wasn’t impressed at all.

Anyone that watched the All-American game he played in immediately understood why he was being recruited for defense.
It's similar to the love that people had for Vandy

While Stanzi struggled. We know how that worked out.

Itwas an extremely small sample, but his throws in the first game weren't bad.

Two drops sucked.

A Brad Banks or Drew Tate type of kid doesn't come around that often

and of what I’ve seen of Derby he doesn’t have those skills.

The issue, which has been mentioned quite a lot around here is that we are a pro style offense that requires a QB that can get the ball under center, have the ability to drop back, roll out, read defenses, step up into the pocket, throw on the run, have the ability to sense pressure on his backside, go through progressions….all of which JVB does not have. Square peg in a round hole….

Everyone is...

small except him and who he throws to.

Another QB who likes to operate out of the shotgun.

Fine. Let’s draw up an O that operates out of the gun. Tune in on Sundays to see how it’s done. Yes, a “pro style” offense.

I don't know how I feel about having my footballers named "Cody"

I’ll have to get over that if the kid can play. God help me when our starting QB is named Braden/Caden/Jaden/Aidan.

How about "Dakota"? Or "McKenzie".

I think every trailer park in the Midwest has at least 3 of each.

I guess I know more yuppies than trailer parkers.
No comment on the two earings or lobe stretchers or whatever the hell you call them?

I’m very disappointed that no one has jumped on this yet.
Iowa’s first blonde hair, Goth QB.

Could be because most don't associate blonde hair and plugs as "goth".
